Very valid points, but it would be preferable if we had 11 players running around with energy rather than tired. It's the tired players who lose concentration and make mistakes, as we've seen with Eze recently. Yes you are certainly right but tied players making mistakes and costing us games and points. The next game is v Everton in the FA Cup so that is a good opportunity to rest key players and give the younger ones a go and lets see what they are made of! have a good night tonight and a very happy New Year!

Roy clearly agrees with some posters on here that the other players in the bench aren’t good enough. Given his obsession with being organised defensively to the nth degree one can only assume these players haven’t convinced him in training that they are capable of holding the shape he wants. Added to that he has criticised his own substitutions on a couple of occasions when he has brought them on and we’ve lost goals. That can only have reinforced his lack of belief in their abilities. He clearly doesn’t think footballers get fatigue.

1. The 67th min sub against Everton saw Olise brought on for his long-awaited first game of the season after his June injury. Had he been fully match fit, he would have started the game. 2. The 2 early 2nd half subs in the Luton game arose out of injuries to Eze and Doucoure - nothing tactical about those 2 subs. 3. The 29th min sub against Bournemouth was another injury related necessity (Mitchell). 4. The HT sub against Liverpool was yet another injury forced one (Edouard). 5. The 34th min sub at the Etihad was another injury forced one (Ward) 6. The 59th min sub against Brighton (Hughes) was the only earliish tactical one as I recall as Hughes was in danger of getting a 2nd yellow. Take those out of the equation and the complaint about Hodgson leaving his subs till too late has merit. Interestingly, in his post-match presser yesterday, Hodgson said how often Palace struggle to hold on to leads in the last part of games. Hasn't he cottoned on to the fact that players getting tired in the final 20 minutes tend to make mistakes (Eze v Chelsea). Brentford got a second wind with their 5 subs on (think fresh legs for half the outfield positions) and had they taken the chances they should have done, we would have only drawn that game. During that spell when they pegged us back it was crystal clear that we needed fresh legs BUT Hodgson refused to budge until the 86th minute. Until Hodgson starts to make earlier subs and tactical ones to counter the opposition manager's, we will continue to concede goals in the last 10-15 minutes of matches IMO. Finally, as someone who sits in the Glaziers section of the main stand, I'm fed up of seeing the opposition players scoring those late goals to win or draw matches. All you've done is select certain subs and put your spin on it. Interesting that you don't mention the Brighton subs which cost us the win.

Roy just doesn't make early subs unless there is an injury. The fact is that yesterday he had Schlupp and Hughes who we know he trusts, so it was nothing to do with quality or Roy not trusting the subs. Franca hasn't let anyone down or looked out of place in his cameos but once again he comes on so late it must be a bit demoralising for him. We won so it doesn't matter now, but in-game management has been a concern all season.

If Roy doesn’t think the bench or youngsters are good enough how does he account for the equaliser at the Etihad? The average age of the team leaving the pitch was 23.1, give or take a few months, and contained two teenagers with Andersen at 27 the oldest player.

EPL Injury table website suggests Rak Sakyi possibly has a 20th Feb return - return dates are often a bit fluid but it wouldnt suggest that he will be much use for the first team during AFCON. Originally posted by Badger11

Franca, Schlupp, Edouard, Ozoh, Hughes, Ahamada, Riedewald? All capable of providing fresh legs in different areas of the pitch. Certainly Edouard, Franca, Ahamada and Schlupp and even Ebiowei can all provide an attacking alternative so I don’t believe there is no one there to pick from. Positive substitutions yesterday once we were two up would have been Franca for Eze, Ahamada for Olise, Hughes for Richards, Schlupp for Ayew, Edouard for Mateta. There is 5 subs without significantly weakening our defensive capabilities and still offering something going forward. The point I make is that we have to use our squad to keep energy levels on the pitch up and to protect our two star assets. Yesterday we ran the risk with Olise and we started ceding possession when other players who had played two full games in 3 days were running on fumes. It’s a game and player management issue for me. Right, let's look at the subs for Saturday. Of the 9 we had Matthews as goalie cover and Tomkins as CB cover so that leaves 7. Of those 3 were defensive centre mids (Ozoh, Jairo and Hughes). One of these could have come on for either Richards or Lerma or even Eze if we wanted to shut up shop with 20 to go. That leaves Franca, Schlupp, Ahamada and OE. Edouard is not match fit so wasn't risked as we were winning. Franca and Ahamada are both young, have never started a game under Roy and it is unclear where their best positions are. Ahamada was bought as a CM, he is not a RW. Schlupp for Ayew is an obvious one that could have happened earlier, but let's be honest he has been very poor this season. I think part of the issue is that Roy played the same team v Chelsea, which IMHO was a mistake as the Brentford game was always the winnable one, so that should have been the focus. At a minimum i would have not started Eze. Incidentally i thought the same regarding Ebiowei, and then i saw him have 20 minutes v Forest away last season. Had a decent amount of the ball but looked lost.

Schlupp and Hughes have been the 2 biggest disappointments this season, hence they are not starting. Hughes should be a given with Doucoure injured but the fact that he plays Richards a CB in that position speaks volumes. Both look massively off the pace, so Roy seems reluctant even to use them as subs
