You weren't supposed to award one because you thought "it might be" an offence. Now refs can award a soft penalty in the knowledge that VAR will look at it anyway, so there will be a "get out of jail card", even though that 'card' nevertheless exposes a wrong decision. In this example, however, the ref somehow decided that there was enough of a case for a penalty for him to save face. Bizarre.

What are the exact rules on penalties? Secondly what is the rule on attackers entering the penalty box before the penalty taker shoots? The Villa man was well inside the box way before the penalty was kicked. It's all so ambiguous and muddling. Does the game no favours. The refs and VAR blokes should follow the rules properly and they should have to explain to the viewers their take on what they saw and why they made their decision. Six minutes to decide a penalty decision is way too long. Yesterday there was 16 minutes of extra time. I had a train to catch. Edited by dreamwaverider (17 Sep 2023 1.08pm)

That’s why it’s all turned into a farce and is ruining the game, I don’t think even the refs know which way to turn sometimes.

I don't think he 'bottled' it as you infer, he was the one that immediately gave the pen, VAR suggested he went & have another look, he decided he was right, no 'bottling' imo.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

I genuinely think he did bottle it. I was there and the longer his deliberations went on the more the Villa crowd got on his back. I totally think he bottled overturning the decision because he was becoming more and more conscious of what the home crowd reaction would be like.

Been down the other end the penalty wouldn’t have been given in my opinion :-(

The ref was definitely trying to prove he was right and so chose the option that Richards didn't touch it. Where are these heat ray thingies you get in the cricket? As for the 'wrath' of the home crowd, i think he is that arrogant, it wouldn't of bothered him. We've had it at Selhurst, ref never blinked an eyelid.
