This is a really weird season with a 4 week break I. The middle and fixture congestion since then. The only consistent team has been Arsenal and even they are having a blip. We are currently in 12th place in the middle of a run of tricky fixtures. We may slip further over the next few games but my guess is we’ll finish around 12th again despite not having Gallagher charging about and with Wilf far from his best.

It takes time to build a team. This time 2 years ago we were playing for 0-0 with the oldest squad in the league. Last year we changed our squad and our style of play and did really well especially given the young kids we brought in. They were bound to take a dip at some point. This season has been a bit flat for sure but that’s been the case for other teams too. I’m writing this season off as a team in transition. I’ll judge Steve and Dougie by what they do in the summer and Vieira by what he does next season.

To answer the original question - he's average and I don't mean that as a put down. Better than Marsch, Lampard, Gerrard and around the level of Hasenhuttl (maybe better than him) Better than Roy ? I'll swerve that one as debateable. However there is nobody better around.
Poor and lack of recruitment plays its part. That we don't have one effective full back is ridiculous. Mitchell needs out of the firing line but what else can PV do? Other purchases have been poor, often injury prone players. Dougie gets a lot of love, but I'm less convinced of his credentials. In fairness I don't know his brief from the board.
SP's influence is weakened by the US investment, without which we may have struggled more.
So this is Palace - enjoy the ride. We'll probably just stay up. PV may walk out of frustration or following 'mutual consent' at the end of season. Whatever I remain of the view he is ok/average but never likely to significantly improve us, despite being a really nice guy.

Or conversely the American investors are weakened by SP's influence as it is his lack of financial resources that stop the Americans from investing further

He was on London ITV News last night discussing his favourite subject - Racism.
Despite being the manager of a Premier League club he was moaning and groaning about the 'lack of black managers and coaches' in the game.
On this subject he will never be satisfied.
I'm tired of his antics and extreme views (that the UK is a racist society).
The writing was on the wall when he was on tv pundit duty at the Euros in Poland and moaned about the 'lack of black faces' in that country.
Now CPFC are creating a team/squad in Patrick's image to keep him happy.
He never will be.

There is a glaring discrepancy between the number of black players, and the number of black managers. Why do we think that is?

I would like to see one less black manager

Same reason there are hardly any black referees.

The current squad doesn’t look up to maintaining a place in the premier. It was obvious we are still very dependent on Wilf to create openings to score. When comparing with other teams it appears we lack pace and fitness to play the current game of closing down the opposition. Whose to blame. PV of course but also SP who hasn’t been able to increase ground capacity that is vital to generate more revenue to increase the quality of the squad.

He's entitled to pose the question but as I and others have speculated:

1. Most PL owners are not British so if there is a problem with hiring black managers it's a bit unfair to blame it on the locals.

2. Most successful players are multi millionaires when they retire being a manager is a full time job full of stress. I would not blame any player who said no thanks not for me.

3. Some players (any colour) are arrogant and want to start at the top and are not prepared to learn the trade as PV did youth team small club etc. This is also covered in point 2 e.g. who wants to do a rainy Tuesday night in Grimsby when you can cuddle up to your model girlfriend in your mansion.

The issue for me is the lack of progression from people who are not ex professional footballers. Jose was a PE Teacher I think Roy started that way as well.

For a rich country we do not have many coaches with the top badges I think a small country like Holland has far more.

So if the FA are serious they should be targetting people who are school teachers, Sunday morning coaches people who can't afford the 4k for the badge and identifying the good ones and getting the professional clubs to give them a leg up by starting with the youth teams.

As for the ex professionals I actually don't care. They have the money to do the training and will have far better contacts in the game than say a local PE teacher if they can't be bothered that's on them.
