Can’t ever remember being so pleased and encouraged after a defeat. We were far better than against Norwich and I’d say it was actually one of our best performances of the season.
Ten thoughts:
1. Edouard is a dazzling talent. I’m not sure he is properly appreciated.
2. We have never felt as Wilf-proof as we do now. I still adore the guy but we can cope without him.
3. Ayew has been in incredible form lately and was superb today. Seeing him go off in tears was tough to witness. Is his Afcon dream ruined?
4. Andersen passed it like Hoddle tonight. What a player.
5. Mitchell looks tired. We lack cover at LB and that’s the only bit of Jan business we need to do.
6. Can we go a bit easier on the refs? He should have booked their left back earlier and bottled the backpass but the abuse was excessive.
7. Olise is so exciting. The way he cuts inside and delivers killer balls is great. Just what we never got from Andros.
8. We all love Joel Ward but let’s be honest - he just doesn’t offer enough going forward. We desperately need Ferguson to be the player we hope he is.
9. Luka was not as bad as everyone is saying but we miss Kouyate every time he doesn’t play.
10. Schlupp is not good enough to play for Palace.

Not having this assessment of Schlupp. I messaged my mates saying he was the best player on the pitch, everything went through him. He’s a terrific athlete who is powerful and direct and offers something none of our other midfielders do. His style Gallagher and Hughes for a place in the starting 11 but he’s a superb option to have in the bench.

You think it’s fine to abuse a guy while he’s trying to do his job? Very odd.

You’re another who fell for the Townsend myth. Chase down the odd backpass you’re never going to get and they all bang on about “putting in a shift”.

Ward offers nothing going forward. We need to upgrade.

Schlupp is not a fantastic anything.

If officials make mistakes you just sit there do you and smile and I saw Townsend trying it wasn't a myth, how anyone could moan about Ward is beyond me ..we are who we are at this moment in time and it's very obvious he is on borrowed time, if you can't see what Schluup can do as a sub then that's your problem.

Tend to agree. What I like is that he seems physically incapable of going in any direction other than forwards - and at speed.

The fouls on Ayew are often ones he initiates, or at least invites. He shields the ball, waits for contact then goes over at least as often as he looks to progress the ball forward. I don't blame him, he's a striker not a winger and he's doing his best for his team, but a more creative player, with greater vision, passing, dribbling and shooting abilities would be more positive than Ayew often is.

Yes, I'd place Olise noticeably above Ayew when it comes to creativity regardless of whether Schlupp scored yesterday or not. My opinion is based on everything I've seen of both players so far. Whether Olise is physically ready to play every week, or whether his defensive play is as good, or whether the team would become a bit too narrow with a left footer on the right are all separate questions of course.

You've just repeated something I mentioned that doesn't make any sense.

Moyes and several West Ham players have admitted they didn’t play very well yesterday. 2nd half it was obvious they wanted to coast. Genuinely think that if PV had brought on Olise and Eze at HT then we would have got something from the game.

The MOTD stat about Olise having a goal involvement every 63 minutes is unreal. What more does he have to do to start or at least get more minutes off the bench???

He started against Villa and was very easily nullified by them, he needs much more experience and strength building to be placed against teams like that from the off, he is at the moment only going to be able to learn without humiliation by being a sub, we missed Ayew hugely in that first half with Villa.

Maybe that’s why he went missing in West Ham’s build up to both of their goals. Rice couldn’t go wrong .

Analysing the goals we conceded against W.Ham, I appreciate that the commentators mentioned that it was an exquisite cross for the Antonio goal but is it only me who has concluded that Guehi could have done better ? He was facing the ball in front of Antonio yet the W.Ham player was able to get a touch and steer it home.

With regard to Lanzini's goal, the defence was so deep when Rice collected the ball, and he was able to advance in acres of space unchallenged before passing to his teammate who also ran through with not a Palace player tracking him.
I don't think that Andersen covered himself in glory when he approached Lanzini who easily beat him as Andersen was heading for the old stand ! In actual fact there were other players near Lanzini and he was able to flick the ball up and get in a shot which of course was not blocked and resulted in the goal.
Indeed skilful from Lanzini but poor from a Palace perspective all round.

I agree about Guehi, he doesn’t always appear to read situations where he has to be first to the ball, he has a tendency to take a let’s see where it goes, attitude, when he should just get something on the ball no matter what.
The biggest problem was that not for the first time in vital moments our mid field did not supply the shield that must be there,. The first goal happened because there was little or no interference with WH , having so much space on the flank. Ward can not be left in the way he was.
The second was no challenge from midfield on one of Europes best midfielders setting up another , with little or no challenge. So the defenders are not perfect but the real reason we leak goals is our midfield might provide more in attack but not enough from a defensive perspective.

It was a great cross for the first goal, Ward unfortunately not close enough to Benrhama to make it even more difficult. Speedy wingers like Leeds away and he cannot deal with them now but still gives his all in other areas which is commendable. In defence of Guehi Antonio is as strong as an ox and looked like he just lost the battle to the ball. As said second goal was way too easy in build up and execution on our part but was a good strike all the same.

Great to see us come out fighting and attacking in the 2nd half and not try to contain. Not sure if it was true that Gallagher was being rested as he had a brilliant 2nd half away to them earlier in the season. He could of conjured up something again and taken a breather in the FA Cup. Overall a good performance from us, only lacking in the result and another pointer the team are going in the right direction. COYP !!

It’s unfair to blame Ward for their first - neither his speed nor his positioning.
was at fault. He has been told to play as a CD when Palace have possession and so he moved across to form a back three with Andersen and Guehi as Palace’s midfield pushed up the field. The midfield (Hughes?) immediately lost possession though, failed to react quickly to that (no midfield press!) and the ball went straight out to WH’s left wing. Ward did his best to get back across and was pretty much there.

The goal was the result of that loss of possession - not Ward’s speed or lack of.

A correct assessment in my view. I would add that Ayew could have been closer (as noted by MOTD).
