I heard playboy were offering her £10 million for just a centre spread, half hour of work, I thought that is scandalous, wait until she is at least 19! Seriously, does Playboy magazine still exist?

Maybe not Playboy, but she's featured in the October edition of Vogue. [Link] She is a marketing dream for almost any product you can imagine. Millions will be falling into her purse so fast she'll find it hard to believe, let alone count. I just hope for her sake she has the right talent and experience supporting her so her feet stay firmly planted on the ground. Still think it would be great publicity for all concerned if Mr Parish were able to persuade her to visit Selhurst for a high profile home game (Brighton?).
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

was it really a breakdown? I don't know why people feel the need to make out she is tarnished by that episode - not saying you're saying that, but OK she may have been overwhelmed by the situation, but heat and physical exertion would have played their part, but even without that there's this underlying idea that she 'lost it' or showed some essential weakness. I quite like these stars, gymnasts, tennis players or whatever, who sometimes feel that they've had enough of the whole shabang and being everyone else's property, it's quite natural, just makes them human not weak or inadequate. Emma's come through that without being affected by all the mischaracterisation, it says a lot about her but also about the people around her. Fernandez too was great during and post match - sounded a bit dogmatic pre-match, but she was talking about her expectations, which are understandably very high. There was no intention, in any way, to belittle her. She did breakdown and was unable to continue due to a massive panic attack - presumably caused by the pressure of the game. This in no way makes her weak or inadequate, but does highlight the pressure that is on these players - especially one of her age. Indeed, it shows just how human she is, and in support there were many famous people (Hugh Grant was one) who came out and admitted that they also suffered in the same way, in their various fields of fame - which is no bad thing either, as it brings into the public arena just how much people can be affected by things that on the surface they seem to deal with easily. As I say, possibly (hopefully)they have brought in specialist therapists/psychologists to help her to cope in the coming years, rather than see her burn out before she has the chance to reach her full potential, which would be very sad.

Yes, it goes to show the immense pressure involved and that even at elite level people are not impervious to nerves, stresses, self doubt and the like. What a way to bounce back and prove some of those detractors wrong though. Success is the best reply.

Emma Raducanu has risen to #23 in the WTA ranking list, as a result of her US Open win following on from reaching the last 16 of Wimbledon. Bear in mind that a player's ranking is based on their accumulated tournament performances over the previous 12 months. Her ranking at the start of 2021 was #345.
