I think this signing works for us as we are kind of the ‘good guys’. Clyne has had his injury struggles and was poor at Bournemouth after Liverpool shopped him out on loan. We have come in offered him a chance to get fit and play for a contract here. He knows the club, he knows some of the pros and he knows the coaches and how Roy plays. We need cover, but more than that, if he gets back to the level he is capable of, he could easily challenge to be a starter. Especially with Ferguson being able to play CB and both sides of full back. Who knows where he will settle as a defender. If we can shift out Innis and Woods on loan then we should find a spot for him especially with Ferguson and Mitchell not having to register. Ferguson has only played some 20 games for WBA in the Championship so has hardly played many games either in central defence or in both full-back positions. Ward has been seen as a bit of a weak link at right-back, yet we bought someone who had a long-term injury, has not played since January and heaven knows when he will be available.

By who? Me for one, but he actually proved me wrong. He did very well last season, but does get found out against the best forward players...

Joel Ward is one of my favourite players. Always gives 100%, never complains and I have a lot of respect for him. But an injury free and match fit Nat Clyne would get my vote at right back.

Perhaps it was a bit unfair of me...Ward is actually my favourite Palace player, because he always gives 100%, and is one of our most consistent players. He can get caught out against the best PL atteckers, but he is hardly alone in that

I've seen that thread where your view was largely shot down. I get we can improve on him. However it was wrong of willo to single him out as the weak link given he is no more no less "replaceable" than quite a few of the players in the first XI.

I made one post on Page 3 of 5 and no one referred to it whatsoever in their replies. My post was in line with the general consensus on the thread, in that he has been great for us but now needs to be improved upon. If you are going to contribute then please don’t misquote FM’s and also get your facts straight!

AWB was very much the first choice right-back with Ward the backup and there were concerns that Ward would be targeted by other teams. Supporters were not overly comfortable with Ward's ability to cope in the PL at this stage of his career whilst accepting that he has proved a loyal and able servant over the years. At that time, having lost AWB, bringing in a right-back with a long term injury problem did seem folly - Ferguson hasn't kicked a ball since January and heaven knows when he will return. If Ward get's injured who is his replacement ? Kelly ? He is certainly not a right -back. Edited by Willo (07 Oct 2020 11.05pm)
