I guess the MSM are still enjoying the bank holiday as most have not yet reported in any detail that 350 arrests were made and many police officers were injured.

Sounds about par for the carnival.

350 arrests out of 2.5 million people. A very small ratio. Having metal detectors at all entry points was a great idea and helped me feel a lot safer. Great atmosphere there on the day also.

edited with some more stats I've seen on this... 3000 full time jobs created, £93million added to the local economy, 0 fatalities, lowest arrest/offences rate against any major UK festival

The figure most quoted for attendance is around 1mm. Arrests at football grounds are 3.5 per 100,000 or 35 for 1mm people. 37 police officers injured needs also to be considered again these numbers are similar to previous years.

I am sorry I find it hard to believe that 3000 full time jobs are created for an event that occurs over 2 days? What are these people doing the other 363 days and who is actually paying them?

Not against having the carnival just against the current format. The carnival in Rio was moved to a stadium for similar issues of violence, robbery and crowd control.

Where did you get these stats from?

Not sure of the true figure for attendance myself, seen 1 million quoted some places, 2.5 million across the two days quoted.

The job stat baffled me too, to be honest.

A carnival moved to a stadium isn't a carnival IMO. Moving it to a stadium would drastically change the feel of it with a large number of food stalls/sound stages having to be removed. The Red Bull sound stage itself was around the size of a small football stadium

Is that the first year they've done that? Yes, good call though. If millions of people are out to have a fun day or weekend, anything that makes them safer can only be a good thing.

Based on an arrest criterion that is beyond flexible. Now if they applied the same standards on the NHC as they did to policing football matches, you might have a better comparison but the truth is that somebody has to try pretty hard to get arrested in that part of West London over those few days.

Personally I don't care that much about the event. Wildhorse's could not drag me up to it but it has been established now for decades and like it or not, is part of the wider fabric of London life. Everybody enjoys themselves differently so let them crack on with it.

But let us not pretend that it is somehow this bastion of civility. It has become an event when people openly flout a range of laws and get away with s*** they would not elsewhere. And increasingly officially sanctioned. Such is modern life.
