weaselpop Flag Southeast London and damn proud of... 22 Aug 17 1.17pm

Well, I've re-listened to the HOL interview, I've read the whole thread here, and I STILL don't understand this appointment, its timing, or how it actually happened. There was no hint or rumour that we were looking right now, no gossip (that I've seen), no other names in the frame, no betting odds for us to lol over, none of the usual media paraphenalia. So did SP just ring him up and say "Hi Dougie, I've got a job for you, let bygones be bygones, and btw you start on Monday".

Other posters have argued that we have needed a Director for a while, so why now? And then there's the 'theory' that he's there in case FDB fails badly - laughable to me. So maybe SP has been mulling this for a while but the timing wasn't right before, maybe he also ran it past FDB from the start but wasn't able to activate it until now... But as I say, without any kind of information (fact or fiction) I can't begin to get my head round it. Personally I've no objection to the post, I've no great hatred for DF because of past errors of judgement, and I think he's a pretty shrewd thinker - apart from the Bolton debacle...

Appointing a Sporting Director (or Director of Football, or Recruitment Director - different titles but essentially similar remits and responsibilities I imagine) seems to be a logical step. Don't most Premier clubs employ one? They can have a significant and positive effect e.g. Steve Walsh at Leicester (now Everton). FdB has gone on official record to say he's comfortable with the concept, indeed to the extent of recommending it to Steve Parish.

The appointment of Dougie Freedman however, was totally unexpected and was inevitably going to be a seen as divisive. A much revered former player who then became a surprise choice as manager and who did much to stabilise the club after a disastrous 6 months under George Burley. He then upset a lot of people by suddenly moving to Bolton and taking virtually the whole of his back room staff with him. This was followed by a strange "textgate" episode involving an attempt by Palace's then Sporting Director, Ian Moody, to obtain an opponent's team details which somehow got sent to DF's phone.

On the negative side, DF upset a lot of people in the manner of his departure and failed as a manager at Bolton then subsequently at Notts Forest.

On the positive side, he knows the culture of Crystal Palace inside out, left a squad behind him that Iain Holloway managed to get promoted at the end of the season, and the bulk of that squad under Tony Pulis avoided relegation. Steve Parish has referred in the past to his meticulous planning, desire to do the very best for the club within limited budgetary constraints and a comprehensive footballing knowledge. My understanding is that he is a successful businessman in his own right outside of football.

So, for me, DF seems to have many of the pre-requisites needed to be a successful Sporting Director. Nothing can alter what happened when he left. Clearly, everyone has is entitled to their own opinion.

I was sorry to see him go and sad at the way it happened. However, I'm delighted he's back and, for me, Crystal Palace is a better place for having him around and I wish him all success.

And yes, of course it's almost inevitable I suppose he'll leave again in the future. Let's worry about that when it happens.

FROM YOUR POST ON AUG 12TH

"I think to judge our situation after one game is premature. But I will say that for Steve Parish to appoint a manager that's philosophy of how to play is so foreign from the game we have traditionally played over the past few seasons, And to not back him in the market is unbelievable, But typical of his style. To say he is an astute Chairman, look at some of his appointments, Holloway, Warnock, Pardew he leaves so much to be desired. We currently have one recognised striker, we are a goalkeeper short and need someone to lead the defence, Today's game reminded me of the Pardew days where we were conceding so many goals, The board need to back Frank in the market, For him its like fighting with one arm behind his back,"

From your post above I would say it IS about spending money... As you say these boards are for every one of us to voice our opinions and views so don't get all up in the air and throw your toys out of your pram and throwing mud around. And as a last point I do support my local team and have done for many years now but who do you support ???

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky.

Isn't that a rather childish attitude and does it really matter if you feel comfortable with the appointment or not as he is not the club's chairman or manager but Steve Parish has appointed Freedman to assist him and he should be allowed to choose whoever he trusts to advise him

It's how I feel. I was disappointed like most when he jumped ship, and then the Cardiff text gate came to light, which left a bitter taste. That's why I feel uncomfortable. Most people move on in jobs, and although may have bad feelings, they don't act childish as you say and start grassing people up. Weren't the reasons for moving to Bolton, a lot more money (a good enough reason), but also because he couldn't have it all his own way at Palace, as he pointed out in his interview. Could that have been childish maybe?

Glad to have Dougie back where he belongs. Yeah he made a mistake, but he's done enough for Palace over his career to warrant forgiveness and a second chance.

I do wonder how many fair weather fans even know who he is. You know, like the ones who haven't seen us play Chanpionship football.

Whatever happened with Dougie, I think this is a good apppintment and I will always have a soft spot for him. He f***ed up, it's as simple as that but at the end of the day he created some of the most memorable moments I can remember as a Palace fan and that definitely includes when he was a manager. The run of games prior to Holloway, palace were playing with a real identity, you could see the potential of how far the group could go as a team. I'm still of the firm belief that we owe probably more than we realise to him for the position we currently find ourselves in. Whether he admits it or not, he would've known he messed up and he got his just deserts in the less than impressive managerial career he's had since going to Bolton. Continuing a grudge is a Palace fans right, but for me it just seems pointless, especially when it's quite clear he loves the club himself.

Good post, I for one was angry when he left us for Bolton, and was pleased that he failed, I joined in with the greedman clan, but having worshiped him as a player, that always tipped the balance with the love him, hate him thing, he made a massive mistake and he knows it, I am now quite happy to forget the past and welcome back a club legend.

Understandably after everything that's happened, people are debating if we need a Director of Football, If FDB is happy with it, if we forgive Dougie for what happened, if it's just a ruse to get Dougie the Manager job.

They are all very exciting points to talk about which is probably why this subject has been glossed over a bit - what the hell qualifications or experience does Dougie have to do this job?

He was a player, than a coach, then a FAILED manager, now a Premier League Director Of Football.

That doesn't seem right to me. I'd love to at least know that since his last Management stint, he's been to University and done a degree in this field.

Going back to the point about whether FDB is happy to have a DoF, I think it's evident he is as he has always had one but why would he listen to the likes of Freedman? He's not a DoF, he's a random club legend that has been slapped with a new Title.

As I have already posted, the two most successful directors of football in the Premiership have less experience than Dougie of managing a football club and it doesn't seem to be relevant for what Steve Parish wants him to do

I can't be bothered to read the whole of this thread, but as I posted on the other thread on this subject, Freedman had a decent record of identifying transfer targets and it's a position I think we should have filled long ago, so I'm quite happy to give him a chance.

That could not be further from the truth!
The only players that Freedman brought in on his own recommendation were Aaron Wilbraham and the flop striker we had on loan from Southampton (forget the name).
All the others were identified or recommended by Lennie Lawrence, Curtis Fleming and Tony Popovic.
That's to say, all the ones that were any good. You know like Murray, Bolasie, Jedi

What I love is now some people are saying Freedman was right to grass us up because we should not have been doing something wrong. (on Twitter and Facebook)

Why not go one stage further and say we should have accepted a points deduction as punishment because we were in the wrong.

He is what he is and has done what he's done. I forgive him but I won't forget what he did and I won't like the guy.

We all make mistakes and we should have to earn trust and respect again not have people get a semi because a 'legend' has returned 'home' a home he was happy to dump on twice or more.

He loves us all so much, right?

Freedman did go and watch Murray. There were more. Moxey, KG etc.

Can't remember on Bolasie. Happened so quickly after the car park showdown talks at Bristol City. Maybe Yannck overheard them whilst rapping and tagging up the car park and told them to check the videos on his website.

DF does know about emerging formations of the day and about them being what you build a squad around, and fitting those pieces of the jigsaw together, which could be useful.

I just doubted him in the dugout, which isn't his remit, and hopefully it doesn't become his, although I have to admit I've posted he'd suit prem management more than championship promotion hunting management.
