Well, your geographical home does not have to reflect your sense of who you are 100% which is why we have London born Cypriots and suchlike still calling themselves 'Cypriot'. Perfectly acceptable in my book due to their very strong family and cultural ties with the place. It will dilute over time as new generations appear which again is entirely reasonable.

I wonder how many third or fourth generation Windrush descendents would not think of themselves as English by now? Not many i would guess.

You will be pleased to know my Exeter-born children, even though i do my best to instill(brainwash) their jock heritage, are unmoved by that as it stands

In a time before the nineties I'd probably agree with you.

For me forty percent of the English population not calling themselves English is a bit too high for the betterment of the English state....especially when you add to that number the minority of egalitarians who dislike their English identities anyway.

Allegiance is important in my book.

Not a fan of David Sullivan but he is offering the homeless man who was helping victims last night accommodation and a "leg up"

Fair play to him

Maybe if they had been asked 'would you call yourself British' the percentage would have been a lot higher and that is also where their allegiance would lie. With Britain. 'English' is just too ethno-centric for these times for many whose recent roots are from elsewhere.

Ah, i started there - St Joe's not Westwood - just a few years after it stopped being a fee-paying independent school full of powder-puffs and had now turned into a home for Oxbridge-bound academics, stray brick-sh1thouses and other assorted nutters roamimg amongst us normal chaps.

I was always on the winning team

To consider yourself English should not be 'ethno-centric'. That's literally doing the BNP's message.

If you were raised in England it is perfectly valid to call yourself English.

If you move to England and assimilate into the culture, after a time, it is perfectly valid to call yourself English if you see yourself as English.

That's how I see it anyway.

Bit OTT though

Hardly. Interestingly, it is thought that a lot of people on these isles can trace some ancestry back to the Stone Age. Not for much longer I fear.
