When two member states finally go to war or have a serious skirmish then will be the time for some to claim, with some foundation at last, it has not been a successful project for peace. But as it stands, 60 plus years and counting says until then, the idea that it has had nothing to do with peace is laughable and somewhat ludicrous.

Totally right and totally deserved. I don't believe that even you believe this stuff. So the defeat and division of Germany, The Bomb, the set up of direct communication with Russia and the United Nations were just minor details. It was the good old European Union all along.

NATO deals with that. You really are a dyed in the wool idealist aren't you.

Obviously, that will forever remain a mystery seeing as, according to the EU, audited accounts are for benders.

Having worked in the NYC Comptroller's Office in the 1990s, any governmental agency or group that refuses to be audited needs a great deal of scrutiny. As an American, I know that any opinion I may have about the referendum is meaningless as I don't have a vote. I'll leave it those who do to make their own decisions and respect the one that is made.

I respect everyone right to have differing opinions on this issue. But you really must stand in that booth and question, is the EU basically going pretty well as it is, or do I want to be poorer, my children poorer, my country less important and Europe generally more unstable? That is the question we are facing. I am happy to admit the EU is not perfect and there have been losers but you must ask yourself the above question. Think also, it is really the Eastern European child in a local school, a fruit picking immigrant who gets up at 5am to go to work all day, or the shopkeeper from Romania who is causing the problems in your life? Or is it a corporate and political structure that perpetuates a cycle of privilege and class, and suppresses the working / lower middle classes

There are many I have spoken to who would scoff at such remarks as they would be in total disagreement with the argument that has been advanced. But we are all entitled to our opinions.
