The problem last season was our squad wasn't good enough in depth. You can only name 25 players in a squad so make DAMN sure they're all bloody good and not piss about with 5 mediocre strikers or centre backs. Yes, we could currently be a bit stuffed with injuries in the Striker department but that's the area we're working on the most. We have done well so far! If you can't see that you're a damn pessimist. An analogy: if I want a new roof on my house, I have to take part of it down first. Sure, it will look a bit s*** half way through (i.e. us only having Wickham fit) but, while you're seeing the builders working hard on it, and can see that the half they've done is in good nick, you're right to feel confident it'll be good when it's complete. A lot of you on here are looking at this incomplete roof and saying 'what a load of s***'. We are Palace. We can't afford to keep 5 strikers while we wait to land a big one. We had to get rid of those players whose contracts have ended. Are you lot seriously saying we should have kept Adebayor and Chamakh and offered them new contracts? Yes, maybe we could have kept Gayle, but we got £10 million for him (!) and he was clearly surplus to requirements once we bag our new striker(s). At that time, too, it seemed that Benteke was just round the corner. Great post.

Flip me slow news day second guessing the bookies odds ....is that what it was come to ? The list of managers and players that were favs to sign for us but then went elsewhere is longer than your arm. Just as accurate asking a fortune teller really. Mystic Meg would be just as good.

My theory is this... Parish is a shrewd businessman and is 'playing the game' with his offers for Benteke. He's not the type to just agree to Liverpool's over valuation and pay over the odds just because he wants him at Palace, although it's obvious he does want him. I'd guess he made the original offer of £25m to 'test the waters' and then when they counter offered and said they wanted the £32.5m they paid for him we then increased to £27m up front with £4.5m in add ons taking the total to £31.5m, which again was rejected. Parish then walked away and concentrated on the USA tour and made a £20m offer for Berahino making Liverpool sweat as to whether we'll come back with another offer as no one else seems interested or at least willing to pay their high demands. What ever agents or media report they will not want him sitting in their bench earning £130k/week or whatever the reports suggest that just makes no sense from a business point of view. Over the past 2 weeks, since it's all gone quiet, Liverpool have identified a few new transfer targets they are after, Moura, Mario, Willems, Meyer etc. In order to fund one or two of these they will need to sell a big name player to raise funds and so when Parish comes back with one final offer next week I expect they will except and all being well we'll see Benteke holding up the mighty red n blue shirt some time next week! Parish finally gets his man for a figure between what both clubs ideally wanted but without being forced to pay the asking price! Shrewd businessman never pay full asking prices and always like to negotiate and get what they feel is 'value for money'. Watch this space...

I think one of two things will happen. Either he'll sign for Palace, ..... or he won't. You heard it here first
