I think you have fallen into the trap of putting all public sector workers in the same basket. There are Senior Civil Servants and there are the "bread and butter" workers.
When you say private tax payer, what do you mean? As a public sector worker believe it or not I also paid tax so, you could say, I paid for my own overtime (by the way in my job some of the overtime was unpaid).
With regard to pay rises, the public sector had a restriction on wage rises for the last 6-7 years I worked, I averaged less than 1% rise per year, taking into account inflation I was in fact, being paid less. George Osborne identified public sector workers as easy targets because, apart from possible the NHS and teachers, the perception from the public was that we did no work and were not value for money, a perception that obviously some on here have got.

Perceptions stoked up by the media to play one set of people against another with the notion that because public sector workers pay is paid for out of taxes that some how they are stealing a living to fuel the race to the bottom argument

I used to be a moderator on another forum running on vbulletin software. We had a user group on that forum called "Coventry" and if anyone was sent to Coventry all of his posts were invisible to everyone except himself so he could go on merrily posting crap never realising that no-one else had to suffer reading it.

If we had that user group here you would be the first person to be put in it so that no-one would have to read your banalities any more

Perhaps, it's just that I would argue we should fight so we all get better pay and pensions rather than others don't deserve it and therefore they should get less. Then everyone gets less.
