Our problem when looking to sign a forward (it remains to be seen whether Bats arrives or not) is that we still have Benteke and Wickham.
I know it a costly exercise letting these guys go but we extended their contracts when the pair of them are absolutely useless.
Poor decision making by the higher ups in the hope of getting money back when the reality is that you couldn't give either of them away - particularly Wickham.
In an ideal world Bats will come and Benteke will go but I am not holding my breath.

I wonder how well Bats and Benteke would perform upfront together.

I’d be interested to see how it worked.

Whilst fitting Wilf, Ayew and Eze in to the equation - hmmm - not sure.

Benteke is out of contract at the end of this season I reckon batshuayi will replace benteke tekkers will be lucky if his even on the bench this season cant see roy playing batshuayi and benteke upfront

Would now be good to get Flynn Downes in and develop him with the first team squad rather than loaning Gallagher, given the Bats news, if it happens.

Sorry I thought I’d clearly suggested a different system of two up top so no you don’t fit all those players in with Bats and Benteke.

With Zaha potentially on the move and no clear idea on a position for Eze it’s not unthinkable that we’d play two up top or revert to this later on in games.

Before anyone moans at me I will update what I have been told:

Palace had agreed a deal for Gallagher as Chelsea were demanding £20m for Batsman so Palace felt they had no chance.

Chelsea then approached Palace with a deal that would extend Batsman to another 12 month contract meaning Palace can take him on loan & then buy him at the end of the season for £20m so in effect protecting their asset so they dont lose him for free whilst also giving Palace the striker they wanted now.

This meant Palace had to withdraw from the Gallagher deal so will now push ahed with the Downes Deal.

This means Palace stay within the FFP as the £20m for Batsman will come out of the 21-22 budget.

All round a great deal for Palace & th final piece of the attacking jigsaw:

Team will look like this depending on injuries & Roys preference:

Guiata

Ferguson Cahill Tompkins PVA

Mcarthur Jairo

Ayew Eze

Batsman Zaha

Subs
Kouayte
Schluup
Townsend
Luka
Benteke
Sakho
Ward
Mayer
Dann
Kelly
Hennessey
Mitchell
MCcarthy

Thanks for the update. I'm intrigued about how the option to buy will be structured I.e obliged to buy, plays over % games etc. 20m seems quite steep atm but if he carries on his form from the last spell then it'll be ok.

Any news on central defenders. We've been linked with the young German and the ligue 2 French player. I'm starting to worry that we're going to have to survive with Dann, Kouyate, Kelly, Ward (all of whom I think are adequate back ups, temporary solutions or partners for better players) for the considerable future with no sign of Cahill, Tomkins, Ferguson, Sakho, PVA (crazy to think that's our top 5 defenders already injured) any time soon.

Hopefully this comes off loan with an option to buy. I would still like another striker as a backup so Welbeck would be fine as long as we don't pay too much.

I thought that FFP had been suspended for this season due to Covid issues

It does look like we are going to revert to 442, but once everyone is fit only Roy will know who starts. I'd rather see Wilf wide right and Ayew up top with Bats though (Ayew is a wide forward player, not really a right midfielder). Ward has had a good preseason too, so don't expect Ferguson to go straight in once he's fit. Not a big thing, but it's Tomkins, not Tompkins.

In today's market 20m is a good deal for a player like Bats, in my view. Too inconsistent for a big team, but expectations will be lower with us and he can have some fun with Wilf, Ayew and Eze. Those 4 should be good value for entertainment if they start together

They have to get rid of Benteke before the deadline finishes, what is the point of extending it for a year, paying him another six million a year then watch him walk away for nothing. if we get six million for him it will square the deal.
