Hughes is a fantastic midfield enforcer with a very defensive mindset which is why he is always selected. However, he can't pass to save his life which is why he is normally on the bench.

Note, when Anderson gets the ball, our players spray off in all directions leaving defences to work out which effective pass he is going to make. When Hughes gets the ball, another player has to come close so Hughes can make the simple pass to them and let them do the passing. In attacking terms, he is a passenger and this is why players like Eze don't pass to him.

I've always admired Roy and what he has achieved for this club, but that was an incredibly turgid game to watch. Scarcely able to string 4 to 5 passes together and so predictable. However, I look at the bench and there is no one I fancied coming on who would change it.

Is some of the fault Roy's. Yes. I still more with SP and the board though. Last 3 windows have not addressed major squad gaps and have just made the situation worse. We have bought players like Franca, Ahamada, Ebiowei and Plange on the grounds that they are young, have potential and we can sell them on for profit. The reality is we also need players for now, and we haven't bought them. Franca looks like he has raw ability, but I have no confidence whether the rest will ever make it as Premier League footballers.

Can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. And overall our squad is a sow's ear. A sprinkling of 6-7 good players doesn't make a good squad, especially when you factor in injuries.

I very much expect I did sit through a plethora of turgid games and perhaps I have been inflicted with "Good old days" syndrome.

I recall the days in the lower divisions when I got soaked to the skin whilst on the Holmesdale Terrace and witnessing games at an empty Selhurst Park.All in the dim and distant past and I was not so ripe in years.As for the present I do not expect dazzling displays of excitement each and every game but our abject home form and displays this and previous seasons has tried my patience.

Game on game we witness bland performances, some could be described as dire, and in all honesty my time could be better spent just following proceedings from the warmth of my abode and not having to endure a 4 hour round-trip.
Maybe if I take leave of my senses and travel up to Selhurst Park I will ensure I do not leave home without a white handkerchief and might be winded to wave it in the hair in total disgust as they do in Spain.

Whilst I think it’s fine to acknowledge there are glaring holes in our squad, I think Roy’s rigidity is what leads us to not rate so many of our squad players - they look crap under Roy because he has no idea how to get anything out of them if they don’t slot perfectly into his low block.

Players can look completely different under different managers and systems, and my view is many of our squad players are good enough to contribute, but we don’t allow any room for them to do so.

When I compare our squad to teams like Everton and Bournemouth there’s just no way we should be as inferior as we are.

Sadly as many have already said we have 6/7 quality EPL players who would make any EPL squad but as for the rest, they are championship or lower at best, then there are a bunch of youngsters who warm the bench but can't make any real contribution, they should be out on loan getting game time and improving their match skills rather than bench sitting just because Parish & his fellow Directors do not want to spend any money putting together a EPL standard quality squad of players and as a result our good players are overworked and as a consequence prone to injury!
