I find it disappointing that people criticise Edouard and Mateta but give Ayew a “free pass”. Looking at their Premier League stats over the past three years Mateta has scored 8 goals / 4 assists in just under 2494 mins (28 match equivalent), Edouard 15 goals / 4 assists in 3151 mins (35 match equivalent) and Ayew 8 goals / 8 assists in 5582 mins (62 match equivalent). Furthermore most of Mateta’s appearances have been as sub especially when we are behind but Ayew starts most games. Given his poor record for losing the ball (top of the EPL stats 23/24, top 22/23, 4th 21/22) I wonder what his purpose in the team is other than running around making a nuisance of himself?

Ayew's been arguably player of the season so far. His close ball control is insane. His selfless work for the team is well documented by every manager that's managed him. And we've seen (like this weekend against Spurs) and the goal vs West Ham and numerous other occasions, there's quality there too.

Massive player for us.

I watched Liverpool v Toulouse last night. Although Toulouse lost 5-1 they played with a speed and approach that I haven't seen before. Liverpool matched them and technically outplayed them by a mile, but it comes home from both sides where football is heading. It's all about pace and speed. Moving the ball super fast etc.
By comparison, tonight's game was very slow. Unfortunately, we are not using speed at all and we dont have hardly any quick players. Roy keeps us very well organised but we seriously lack pace. When hughes broke through in first half, they easily caught him up.
Tottenham will not win the league, when things settle down they will be overtaken.
We are way off relegation this season, but we need to put plans in place for post Roy. There are not many managers out there with his technical ability to win points albeit at the expense of excitement.
We badly miss Eze, Olise and Zaha's old pace. Can't wait for E and O to return.
Overall not bad, but we must plan ahead now.

We do have quick players Mitchell, Guehi and Olise but we really could do with a pacey centre forward. It was a shame we did not end up getting Saar from Watford who we were interested in. Eduoard and Mateta have their strengths but neither is out and out quick.

'Strengths' is pushing it a bit .I don't think any team in the league get too worried when they see either of those two on the team sheet.

I was thinking recently we could do with a genuine hold up man who obviously must also have an eye for goal. Bright and Murray were both very adept at shielding the ball and scoring, as an example.

It's not just that, it's his consistency.

You know Jordan will work hard and always produce that which he is capable of. That seems extremely rare these days, guaranteed he'll be in the top cohort of performers for any given game.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I think Son summed it up well he said they were told to be patient and not to panic and once the goal came they started getting more space and managed the game well. Essentially they were confident they were going to win and hence didn't push us too hard. I think what made the game frustrating was how easy we made it for them once they were in front. They'd only just played on Monday and looked like they were playing in second gear. Were JPM/Eduoard told not to press the centre-backs? Were the subs told to press more? It didn't feel like there were any clear instructions to push higher up the pitch. This was always the complaint levied against Hodgson in his previous reign, sometimes it felt like he would rather lose by a slim margin than take a few risks and possibly concede more. I'm not surprised we lost but I'm disappointed we conceded so meekly.

Agree, not sure why Ayew gets so much criticism. ATM he is our one bright spark in the front 3.
To support an argument someone quotes loads of stats, comparing him with our 2 centre forwards, but fails to mention that Ayew has almost exclusively played on the wing for that period. Incidentally Olise scored 2 league goals last season playing in the same position, but he rarely gets criticised for his lack of goal scoring.
Ayew has also 'won' the most fouls over the last 2 seasons, which is a massively important ability to ease the pressure and sometimes to slow the game down.

Well, yes, that's one way of looking at it but, once they were in front, they played as if to say: 'If you want to win the ball, come and get it', knowing (as we did) that if we pushed up and pressed them, we were open to the Spurs strong suit: hitting us on the break. I think that's why we were in such a difficult position.

In mostly it’s a lack of quality in these games against quality teams.
In many respects we did enough to have got something in that first half,we certainly made them work really hard for their HT clean sheet. But we were just that bit to ponderous, quality again, and as some say a noticeable lack of pace when needed, all the usual close control and sloppy end ball problems, because loads of intent not enough quality. Add to that a number of corners which we never looked like we knew what we would do with them other than hope. Spurs second goal was sheer quality ,four pass move,,everyone knew what they were there for., irony is before even their first goal ,Schlup cleverly got to the edge of the six yard box , where the Spurs player played Son in from, played the same pass to same place, no one there.

doubts about Franca are far from stupid based on the evidence so far - what worried me most was when he tried some trick flipped up back heel while he was being pressed by their midfielders in front of our defence - gave the ball away in a really dangerous position with an experimental trick shot. Half a minute later he passed the ball to an imaginary player while stuck in the full back position - I hope it's just an abberation and we get to see the quality that has been recognised, but the lack of awareness of when to bring your skill to the game and when not to was troubling.

Purely because he is a front man who doesn’t score goals but also compared to Olise, he doesn’t create many for our other forwards either. Every other part of his game is faultless as there is no doubting his work rate and his commitment to the team.

Couldn’t agree more. He was a calamity, maybe the occasion got to him. This is not to say he can’t play. Only that he needs educating to the self discipline which is paramount if he stands any chance at all. Whether people notice or not, we have had it with Eze, and Olize, not that they ever looked as ragged as Franca, did that night.
If he was a replacement for any of those gone including Wilf, then not yet he ain’t.
It must have shocked Hodgson how far off it the boy looked, and we know what came next.
