Well according to former referee Chris Foy we are all wrong. Surprise surprise he backs Darren England all the way and says it was a penalty.

Having now seen it several times, if that’s a penalty then the game of football is slowly becoming fcuked. How they can sod about for so long with so many different angles and still come to the wrong decision. VAR is amusing when you’re on the right end of it, but seriously it is ruining the game

Bring back the days where you get a good honest referee fcuk up, at least we know where we all stood and the games finished the same day they actually started

The treading on Eze's foot by a Wolves player two weeks ago was 'far more of a penalty' than yesterday.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

VAR were telling D. England to change his decision, they knew it wasn't a pen. MOTD & Sky also said it wasn't, England decided he was right( prob get a smarmy apology from POGMOL now).

Wasn't it the good old fashioned ref fcuk up the reason we all wanted something 'better'? Careful what you wish for springs to mind.

I’ m fully in sympathy with the idea of going back to the “good , old days” without VAR. On the other hand, I strongly suspect that we would have have been 0:1 down by the 18th minute yesterday, had VAR not been introduced.

When it comes to issues similar to yesterday's penalty decisions, it's back in the realm of opinion.

VAR is useful in terms of offside, where - if used correctly - it can result in a correct call.

But as we saw yesterday, the Richards incident becomes subjective. And the majority think England got it wrong, as do I.

As for the performance, a classic ' smash and grab ' looked on the cards. More clinical finishing could have put the game beyond Villa. It's hugely disappointing to have resisted so well for the majority of the game only to concede so late.

I don’t think they tell the refs to change their decisions, they just suggest they might want to go to the screen and have a look. Which is obviously a massive hint that they might want to think again. I think some refs stick with their decision now despite being told to go to the screen as a power trip, it’s an ‘I’m in charge’ sort of thing, even if the evidence is clear.

I suppose in this case before VAR England would’ve given the penalty and it would’ve been a fcuk up we all would’ve been moaning about it, but at least we wouldn’t have had the chance that the decision could be reversed dangled in front of us for 5 minutes and then it’s still given even though it’s clearly wrong, which makes things a heck of a lot worse and more frustrating. At least before VAR you could understand why and how he fcuked up with one look and the speed of the game, but now there shouldn’t be any excuse which makes ut even more frustrating for fans

In the last 11 games England has reffed Villa he has awarded them 7 penalties. Palace have never won when he has been in charge. Just saying.

You normally come up with an interesting or thought provoking post - but this is pony.

Football, for a club our size, with the constraints we operate in is ultra competitive. There is an average of less than 3 goals scored per game. The idea that Palace should be so much better than the better funded opposition away from home that we can easily overcome terrible decisions like that is delusional.

The ref done us. Short and simple. Mistake or ego or bent.

I do have a soft spot for this American attitude to 'sports'.
We are always moaning on about "the referee!" "the lino!" "we had an injury!" but I think the American attitude is not to be so tolerant of excuses.
For instance, why wasn't it one of our forwards breaking into their box and forcing a desperate last ditch sliding tackle?
If we were doing that down their end we may have got a dodgy pen.
We were hostages to fortune in this game and exposed ourselves to the consequences of a ropey decision.
We have to be good enough to overcome the questionable decisions of the officials.

My take on the game there were a lot of decisions particularly in the first half that went our way. I thought Hughes should have been booked for pulling or trying to pull one of there players back when they were breaking away early on and the disallowed goal was also a very tight call. A split second either with the timing of the run or the frame of the video when the ball left the foot and it could easily have stood. Once we went a head we looked more likely to score a second than they were going to get an equaliser. Ward's miss was the pick of the decent chances we created at that time.
I thought the reason we ultimately lost were down was due to fatigue and not having suitable players on the bench. If we had not lost Lerma and Guehi we would have had Hughes and Richards on the bench. Similarly if Ayew had not got injured Mateta would have been brought on later possibly instead of another midfielder. Where as Villa were just bringing on people like Baily and Tilemans who continued to stetch our tiring midfield.
I thought the penalty call was correct. I think Richards went with his wrong foot and although it was a tight one he made contact with leg first and then ball.
A shout to Doucoure - thought he was supurb. Particularly offensively when we got in front. I can see why Liverpool are keen and big money is been talked about. Eze was not as effective as he can be. Villa were showing him the left side but he always wanted to come in side on his right foot and often got crowded out because of it.
