I have to disagree, he actually carries the ball and plays the ball forward with regularity, even having a hand in a couple of goals this season (including an assist and an average of one key pass a game). He also has an 85%+ passing success rate in his first 8 games, which includes an average of 3 accurate long balls a game. I don't usually lean on stats, but they do seem to back up what I'm seeing. What I would say is that he still seems slightly off the pace in terms of the speed of the PL and occasionally takes too long on the ball. However, at times this season his last ditch tackles have saved us, like the one on Nunez at Anfield. I think once he adjusts to the speed and physicality of the PL he'll really push on. Yesterday was probably his weakest game so far, but that applies to many in the team. Amazingly he's still only 22, but has slipped into the team with maturity. Fair play to you. It's fine IMO to use stats to back up an argument and they've given me some food for thought. Perhaps should temper my expectations a bit. I certainly wouldn't advocate picking Luka or Hughes over him. I frequently change my view of a player but have always thought that defensive mid is the easiest position aside from old fashioned full back. On a broader note the tactic of using Eze and Olise in midfield drew praise against Chelsea and I was pleased to see us persevere with it yesterday.

It might take time to get it to work properly, but a club our size needs its best players on the pitch and Eze and Olise are definitely two of those. I also like the way Olise and Ayew seem capable of switching roles during the game.

We seem to have this every time we are not beaten by another of the big city teams that also think they are big in football terms. Including Villa this is the third time , Newcastle, now Leeds , amongst a mountain of whinging by all their local rags , that they find an ex ref to call a decision that did not go their way into question. I agree he was just as poor when he had the whistle, but not the only one. Dermot Gallagher, worst referee in history of Premier League (apart from Clattenburg of course). Who can forget the Tommy Black goal in the Cup match v Leeds (by coincidence) in 2003? Black's shot went yards over the line into the goal, whereupon Michael Duberry punched it back out. All that was clear from the Upper Holmesdale, looking towards the far goal. But our Dermot gave neither a goal nor a pen. Many years later he complained that people kept bringing up this mistake. (In fact, I had never seen him discuss this before.) Perhaps this is the reason why he still has a grudge against Palace - and playing the victim too.

And in 2005 Gallagher sent off our defender Gonzalo Sorondo v West Brom. Sorondo made a fair tackle on Geoff Horsfield. Gallagher was miles behind the play but guessed his decision and gave Sorondo a red. Tv replays showed how wrong Gallagher was. It was also questionable whether Horsfield was the last man and had a big chance of scoring. Palace drew the match 2-2. If we had won, West Brom would have been relegated instead of us. This clown has a lot to answer for, instead of pontificating on Palace matches today. Like Clattenberg, he is clearly biased against us.

I am not aware of any grudge or bias towards our club by erstwhile, or indeed current PL referees.

He apparently wrote 'I can see teams like Palace leaving these two behind as the season goes on, I quite like Palace but just cannot give them anything because of that mug Willo, which is a shame really'. He also suggested you had an 'effeminate' running style allegedly and that he once saw you eat a dessert with a soup spoon. I'm not commenting, that's just what I have heard. Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

You make it sound as if there were any bias then you would know about it, which (to use your parlance) would be utter hogwash. The decisions the poster referred to were so poor that you can only assume utter incompetence or bias and neither reflects well on the referees in question.

All I will assert is that I have engaged in numerous conversations over several years with people connected to the 'World' of football and not heard of any bias or grudge towards our team.I will leave it at that, I have no desire to gallivant any further down this line of debate.
