Interesting to read today’s comments compared to those made immediately after the game. Still a sense that PV’s substitutions didn’t work and would have been better left on the bench but a bit more acknowledgment that his decision to respond to Brentford’s changes wasn’t the sign of a tactically inept manager. Edouard for Mateta (56 min) and Ayew for Schlupp (73 min) were sensible decisions. Bringing Luca on for Eze at the same time exposes the limitations of our squad in midfield but had it been a fit Jimmy Mac would have been a sensible move. We lost control in midfield after that. Maybe that was because Eze came off as people here suggest or maybe because Franck loaded midfield. Either way he responded 4 minutes later by going 5 at the back with Mitchell on for Olise - the same 5 who played so well against Liverpool. Reasonable to expect they’d cope with Brentford for the last 10 mins plus.

Also seeing recognition that the defence has to take its share of the blame. We defended deeper and deeper and failed to clear our lines properly with Zaha and Ayew we had options for the out ball but couldn’t find them. If JW was indeed “confused” about his role in 5 at the back he has a short memory given where he played against Liverpool. We failed to stop the cross at source, allowed a free header in the box, have a keeper who’s scared of crosses, and lack a Gary Cahill type leader in defence.

Finally, Wilf scored a worldly but when it comes to tactical knowledge he’s no Pep Guardiola. I agree with the comment that he should have kept his opinions for the dressing room.

We are missing the aerial presence and experience of Kouyate imo.

Kouyate has made 2 appearances from the bench for Nottm For in the PL.

Offers far more than Milivojevic does and I suspect had he been a substitute for us yesterday he would have been introduced into the fray instead of LM.

First of all I share the massive disappointment with the result.

But I'm going to stick my head above the parapet and defend PV - a bit.

As far as the subs were concerned, Brentford had just thrown on three sets of fresh legs. Sometimes you need to respond to what the other guy does.

Clearly PV thought we needed fresh legs, especially in midfield. Sending Ayew on made sense. Eze wasn't having his best game in my view and, whatever his faults, Ayew is always energetic.

Who could he send on for a tiring Schlupp? There really weren't many options on the bench. No one is going to pretend Luca is the player he once was and I do get a sense of foreboding when he comes on but he really isn't as awful as some on here seem to think. People have suggested Hughes is a better option but he wasn't even on the bench (injured?). MacArthur would have been ideal but he wasn't available either. The only other option on the bench was Phillips who I have hardly seen play.

The problem with going to five at the back with Mitchell on for Olise seemed to be that the players didn't then have a clue what they were supposed to be doing. They have played five at the back before, they train for that formation, they should have been able to handle it better than they did. Instead there was a collective mental breakdown with even Guaita making some God awful clearances. And the centre backs have to take responsibility for the absolutely appalling defending for the equaliser.

We do need a couple of incoming transfers that's for sure and clearly we need to keep Wilf.

I commend you trying to defend, however:

At the point of our subs we were pushing for a 2nd. Brentford hasn't gone close, threatened, or shown any signs that they were starting to take control. If anything they looks lost and devoid of any ideas of how to break us down.

Luka looked slow, always late to the ball, sloppy passing and clumsy fouls. How he even gets on the pitch it beyond my understanding.

As we have seen in almost every example of drastically shifting formation in a game, it causes more problems than it solves.

In summary, we controlled them pretty well all game. Especially in the 2nd half, hence Frank making a triple and double substitution. PV reacted to a potential threat vs an actual threat and in the process weakened the personnel, added confusion and removed our ability to hold the ball and get out. Inviting pressure. And to be fair we were very lucky not to have lost that, which is madness considering how the game was poised at 75 mins

To my ageing mind, he is now not an asset but a liability.

Apropos last night's game, I actually predicted 1-1 which I strongly suspect is the first prediction I have got right since I joined HOL in 2013 !

Couldn't help but think today that Phillips would have been a better sub than Luka. More of an engine, a bit more pace plus hungry for a game. Not great but if he made a mistake we blooded him, if he did well a bonus and food for thought.

Everyone laying into Luka here - don’t think he did a lot wrong to be honest.

Always difficult as a sub to judge the pace of the game. Complaint is that’s he is slow and Phillips for example would have more energy. Well Richards came on at the weekend and he couldn’t judge the pace of the game. Mitchell didn’t get up and running either /

Personally I’d like to see us put our foot on opponent more, but to blame the players coming on is foolish. Tactics yes, players no.

Richards played against Man City. Luka made average Brentford suddenly look good.
Chalk and cheese comparisons.

Luka didn’t make them look good. Sitting back did.

Oh yes he did! Should not be let on the pitch. He's done well, but not any more.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Absolutely. But that's what people do on here...like to single people out. Then everyone jumps on the bandwagon.

The whole team sat back and invited pressure. That's why we conceded. But much easier to throw the blame at Luka. Pretty pathetic.
