The reason the EU exists is a great deal more complicated and important than who decides on where our overseas aid goes. Which is why the decision over membership needs to be taken by those we elect to study the issues, who have access to impartial experts and the time to consider and debate them. Not by us basing our decision on emotion, personal obsessions or the effect of marketing campaigns. We need to trust our politicians and to do that we need to elect better politicians. Edited by Wisbech Eagle (15 Jan 2022 1.35pm) How can you elect better politicians when those entering politics are rarely trustworthy or are not already one eyed single party aligned before they start. They should be representative of the people and not representative of a party system.

Look at the Covid figures, and you'd think the Government couldn't organise a pish-up in a brewery.

Our politicians need to be able to vote with the conscience and not by the diktat of a party machine, whipped into line by threats of de-selection if they fail to toe the line. We need people to see it as an honourable profession, well rewarded whilst serving and well regarded when not. No MP should fear losing their job through voting conscientiously. We need the best to come to serve us, and not chancers seeking opportunities.

Across the world politicians organise themselves into parties and vote according to the party platform to varying degrees. Lots of small parties with MPs voting by their conscience sounds great but in many countries what this really means is that minority parties hold the balance of power and hold undue influence over the larger parties e.g. DUP when Mrs May was in trouble or the extreme regilious parties in Israel. I don't like the current system but I have yet to see a better alternative.

Boris is currently 4/9 to go this year, 6/4 2023 or later, and 3-1 2024 or later. So it's certainly looking like he could be on the way out, but by no means a certainty. Somewhat in the balance still.

Boris almost certainly won't quit. The trickle of photos would have to become an avalanche of seriously compromising stuff, and even then I think he'll have to be forced out. What will emerge the other side (in terms of Governance), is of bigger concern.

The last thing we need are extremists holding the country to ransom. My hope is by loosening the control that Parties have over their MPs people of goodwill can make arrangements or build grand coalitions. It must surely be possible to devise a series of rules which ensured influence proportionate to the number of MPs any party held.
