Watching again Burnley's late chance in which Guaita did well to get down to and push round, it could easily have gone in and that would have been 4-3. It's one thing to play nice and tidy out from the back football, but when centre halfs cannot defend a basic ball lobbed down the middle then there is a problem. Andersen looks particularly vunerable, and this is not the first time. I would expect there to be a strong focus in training by PV and the coaching staff on this aspect of defending.

Vydra should’ve buried it. We totally got away with one there. Some terrible defending throughout the game and how it didn’t cost us I just don’t know.

Can anyone make a case for Ayew starting on the right, when you have Edouard, Olise, Eze or even Schlupp, O'Neill is a decent player but he's no Mane, Ward and one of the two DMs could cover that problem, let O'Neill worry about helping his LB against one of our better attackers

Occasionally, I really like Ayew and appreciate what he brings to the team and his work rate, however on Saturday, 15 minutes in, it was plain to see that Olise should’ve started.

We were absolutely all over them and Olise would’ve had a field day. We could then have kept Ayew in reserve as an option to replace Olise with fresh legs later on in the game, to hold the ball up and see out the win.

That first half on Saturday was absolutely tailor made for Olise.

The thing is, Andersen lost us 2 points against BHA, and could/should have lost us 1 point yesterday, giving up the last second free run on goal, plus ridiculously avoiding a red card for that obvious foul earlier. He butchered two relatively simple things to defend.

Do you not mean Guehi?

It was MG who did the matrix body swerve to get out of the way of the ball following Guiata’s poor free kick and Maupay just lobbed the advancing goalkeeper.

Rather suspect that Ayew was there to provide cover against Cornet as opposed to McNeill. Cornet is a very special talent imo.

Would personally have started Edouard on that flank. He was I thought our most potent attacker agaisnt Wolves and his pressing is first rate and there is really little difference in his stats compared to Ayew in that regard.

Benteke was injured for a while and on his return, because there was no similar reserve for him, the team played in a way which gave him little chance. His scoring rate this year under Roy was pretty good. His goals probably kept us up under FSA and he was excellent at the end of Hodgson's first season

it is nice to see Benteke looking like his old self but the amount of people who defend him constantly is bizarre. For 3 years the guy was a joke whilst on c£120k a week. His work rate and common sense/decision making was so poor during that period.
Incidentally at the end of Roy's 1st season we played Wilf and Andros upfront for many games, with Tekkers usually on the bench - not sure how you can say he was excellent.

Took his 2nd goal very well on Sat, so hopefully his confidence is permanently back

So? More to the point, in the corresponding fixtures last year (excluding Brentford, obviously) we collected just 8 points as opposed to 15 this season. We're on an upward trajectory.

Given our current weakness at set pieces (the worst in the PL this season) should we not be having someone on the near post at corners. Free Kicks are a different matter due to the need to keep a high line but the ability of our players to man mark at set pieces is definitely a problem.

Olise showed defensive support when he came on (albeit giving away a careless freekick), looked more dangerous going forward, is quick and is actually quite tall for a winger. He can also take set-pieces. Ayew works hard, but it is becoming increasingly hard to justify his inclusion over Olise. I also think Edouard was unlucky to be benched. Zaha needs to up his game with Eze close to a return as well.

Yep

Olise is showing signs that he has taken on board the hardworking pressing ethos and also took one for the team against Wolves with a very professional foul! There were one or two mutters from Reading that he drifted in and out of games so think it's fair to say he's on an upward curve in team play.

Have been one of those who has consistently supported Tekkers and see he can play a role but would love to see Edouard central. The one area you'd likely back Tekkers over Edouard there is in the air but oddly he has been less than lethal in that respect - the sitter he missed against Burnley was pretty similar to the misses v Newcastle.

Agree totally on players at the posts on corners! When Burnley scored the 2nd goal, 3-4 Palace players were just in a mess 2-3 yards from Guita's right post (where the header ended up in the net.)

Possibly - however, people on the post reduces the number who can mark.

There are a few issues we need to resolve - in no particular order

1. VG rarely comes off his line and this invites pressure. Burnley has successfully exploited this in the past. We clearly haven't learnt
2. Do we man mark or do it zonally? We seem to do a bit of both
3. Should we have a couple of blockers to stop/slow the runners e.g. Mee for 1st goal had an uninterrupted run
4. Tekkers - isn't given a man making role since the 5-4 Swansea game when he lost his marker 3 times. So if a team has more than 3 tall players we struggle
5. General organisation - there don't seem to be enough leaders organising things on the pitch. I've noticed this for a few years now. We seem to let players stand in front of the keeper unopposed etc or if the opposition make a sub we don't adjust accordingly.

Good headline in today's Mail match report:-
'ROLL UP, ROLL UP! DON'T MISS VIEIRA'S GREAT ENTERTAINERS'.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
