Good for you. I don't want it banned but like the carnival in Brazil it has got to big to be properly managed in the narrow streets of Notting Hill. It's time they found a stadium or central area to host it safely. Previously there have been numerous reports about crushing due to large crowds I'm afraid it will take a tragedy of that magnitude before the politicians do anything. Nice idea but the organisers would likely would resist that as, to them, it's important the parade continues 'in our neighbourhood'. I was born in North Kensington and like Brixton the area has been home to Caribbean migrants as far back as Windrush.

I'm sure they would, I just hope we don't have a tragedy before common-sense is seen.

The sheer violence, thuggery, stabbings and anti-social behaviour occurs year on year, it is totally unacceptable and the 'Carnival' should be banned.I suspect the actual figures quoted due not represent the sheer scale of what has become a dastardly yearly crime spot. Of course it will allowed to continue unabated, more's the pity. I have made my views perfectly clear and have nothing more to add on this matter. No amount of statistical 'Massaging' will alter my mindset. Yup, nothing, absolutely nothing will ever change your mind. Talking of 'massaging', it must be lovely for you lot, massaging each other on a daily basis, pinging your views around your cosy, Daily Mail sponsored, echo chamber. Great fun to watch lol.

I always think any person is so cool when they enter any dynamic to just stereotype and slag off everybody there, almost heroic you might say. Carnival brings out and provides ample opportunity for all the worst elements of the Carribbean community to thrive. Coming from Lewisham, I had peers who'd attend purely just to sell drugs, rob, fight and cause havoc. There was no mistaking what the occasion represented to them. You throw in a culture of knife battles these days and it seems ludicrous to provide an annual platform for this mayhem to occur. To deny the existence of such a prominent element and allow it to thrive seems insane, much as some people wish to just ideologically deny this reality. The saddest part of all this being the fact that the Carribbean culture is, IMHO opinion only of course, one of the best and most desirable as a theme for any celebration - food/music/dancing/fashion/general good times. Just the thought of it now wants to transport myself on this drab, dreary Tuesday. Also, the denial of people to celebrate a cultural heritage in our now multicultural nation should always be challenged. I would suggest that what we see play out is that intended to be celebration of Carribbean culture being unfortunately, but inevitably, hijacked and besmirched by a newly existent but not insignificant element of 'British-Carribbean, youth culture' which is plagued with violent criminality and nonsense. This faction has a serious problem, whether you blame it upon the 'British', 'Carribbean' or any other associated characteristic of it. The answer would surely be better/more resourced/smarter policing however I don't think that is possible for a variety of reasons. Would be an immense shame to see it closed down, stopped or reduced significantly but how many murders/stabbings else have to occur before a threshold is reached to take action?
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I have to admit to not finding it that big a deal. I never went when I was living in London as I just didn't feel it was my thing. I wonder if this annoys all the hipsters in those areas these days - which seems slightly humourous. I can imagine them all being annoyed at having to move the Prius. See, there are certainly positives. Plus, there's always that fun video of a nice London Bobby dancing. Or a fat woman doing something.

Almost as though ambivalence is regarded as a crime.

This thing is just an annual humiliation to the English in their capital city. It's the least English thing and completely alien to me. Apart from musing over the number of stabbings and such like that occurs every year during it I largely ignore it. Edited by Stirlingsays (30 Aug 2023 4.31am)

I was told by local black friends that those who mugged me almost certainly came in from outside just to mug (I am not pointing the finger at you EB!). You don't crap on your own doorstep. However, I doubt this was a one off. I suspect people still come in just for the trouble and will continue to do so. Any solution has to be worked through and agreed between organisers, police and the community. Good luck with that!
