Trying to remember which season it was, think it was back in the early 90's but we had a stupid number of kits. We had traditional red and blue stripes and then some bright spark decided our away kit should be all blue! and then the 3rd kit all red! Was all very silly and we seemed to wear a different kit every week. I think it may have been about 1991 around ZDS Final time

No, I believe that sponsorship deals mean that clubs can only sell replica kit with the sponsors name on it. west ham are offering their third kit this season to purchase without a sponsor. its a start to breaking the mould.

The first match I went to at Selhurst Park was in 1979, and there was Vince Hilaire wearing a sash and we beat Arsenal 1 - 0 with an attendance of well over 40,000. Vince was unbelievably talented on the ball. As a kid, it was unforgetable for me !!!! The red and blue striped shirts mean jack sh*t to me. Dudes mistake them for Barca or some other sold out club. It's just boring. The classic red-and-blue sash on white is Palace through and through... original and iconic. Friends who support other clubs just can't believe it when we churn out a new dross red/ blue striped shirt. They all associate Palace with the sash. End of rant !

Malcolm Allison joined Palace as manager in 1973, he rebranded the club, changing the badge, the nickname and introduced the red and blue striped kit. The white with red and blue sash was brought in as an away kit, but was subsequently kept on as a home strip for a few years. The sash idea was actually borrowed from Manchester City, who were managed by Allison before coming to Palace. Their second kit was white but with a red and black sash.

I'll stand corrected but we used the red and blue sash as the home kit in 72-73, made by Umbro... I have one.
Then, City used a red and black sash in 75 as an away kid... so again that was after us. In the 50's and 60's City used clarat with sky blue pin stripes much like ours in the 60's.

The White with red and blue sash, in fact the whole strip inc. blue & red socks, WAS 'liberated' from the Man.City 1972 away strip. Suspect that may have been Malcolm Allison's idea at City too, just prior to coming to Palace. Check Google images for Colin Bell to verify.

So, in the 72-73 season Palace used a red-and-blue sash as a HOME shirt for the first time, while City used a red-and-white sash on blue as a "third" shirt, ie. the same season. That was also the first time they used a sash. I followed your suggestion but found no dated City sash for Bell. Correct me if wrong, but City first used a sash (red and black) on a white shirt in 1975 and that was their away shirt, three seasons after Palace used a sash on a white home shirt. I can't find any hard dated proof that City used a red-and-blue sash on white... there are replicas suggesting that they did, but not real shirts. Ours is there to see in loads of photos, and like I say I have one.

This is the problem, every year we have fans a certain age who want the sash because of childhood memories, then we have fans who want the Steve kember with claret and blue pinstripes, then fans who just want claret and blue on it, im 40 and have only ever known us in red and blue, we've had that for nearly 50 years now, that's our team colours.
