Could you imagine Austin and Gayle up front! Austins shots and Gayles poaching space creation it would be awesome!

I'm afraid not - if Austin does arrive I fear Gayle will be heading the other way - althought I hope not!

I just wonder if we don't have Remy lined up and Cabaye is the domino that tips the stack. Things have been very, very quiet on the Remy front...really, not many rumours for an available player of his stature yet we now appear to be second favourites to get him in the betting. I can't help wondering if Remy is waiting to see if Cabaye signs before making his own mind up about Palace. The two have a lot in common; both have played for Pardew before (and with each other), and both are on the fringes of the French squad and wanting to impress before Euro 16 next year. That means there's no point either of them going to a big club where they might not have a central role. I think if we get one, we may get both and if Cabaye doesn't sign, we won't get either. If we do somehow sign Cabaye and Remy, other than missing the entire season because I'll spend the next ten months banging one out, we are going to be looking at competing for a Euro League position.

Lovely thoughts, but I can't help thinking: cost.

I can see us buying one £10M+ player; but 2, or 3? Splashing out £20M-30M on 2 players with a hike in wages needs to pay for itself somehow. So...

Extra TV matches if we perform well; running up losses that we know will be paid under the following season's TV deal; sponsorship contract not in line with Championship rates like the cruddy Neteller deal; proper nationwide merchandising and Cabaye shirt sales.

There, business case made. Get 'em both in!

PS Remy more likely over Austin for the reasons you give. I can't see us buying both. I would rather we lured Friend from Borough and got a decent CB.

Remy on a season long loan with option to buy would make sense as I believe Chelsea have Falcao on a season long loan (announced today) with the option to go permanent.

Can't see Gayle going the other way when there have been rumours he's going to one of the Premiership new boys. Campbell maybe going the other way and Gayle out the door to fund/part fund someone coming in.

I see QPR have just signed a German Striker which could mean Austin will soon be on his way hopefully to us.

Sky reporting Leicester have had a £12 million bid rejected by QPR.

Come on Palace before someone else gets him.

You'd imagine, as long as we agree a fee with QPR, then the player would likely choose to stay in London.

Not sure why you'd want to move to Leicester, especially given their lack of manager at the moment.

My sense of what is rational in today's transfer market may reveal that I am stuck in the past, but I just can't get my head around the idea that we will spend £15m (or whatever it would take) to buy one player. I guess we will have to at some point if we are to stay in the Premier League, but I don't know if we have reached that stage yet.

According to Steve Parish we don't just want to stay in the Premiership we want to push on from last year and that will require a quality (read expensive) goal scorer

Already have at least one, if not two. Anyone new would have to undeniably be an upgrade in my opinion.

I'd say £15mil is about the ceiling in terms of Austin's value. Anyone that can score 10+ goals in the Premier League will always be £10+ million if they are the right sort of age and show promise and potential. If a couple of top four teams were interested, his value would nearly double (ish), because his nationality comes into it given the quota for homegrown players.

When you weigh up that this is our third consecutive season in the BPL, we have a healthy bottom line, the player is question is proven at this level, in a poorer team, and has potential to turn a profit if he continues to improve, then I don't think it's too far away from where we need to be.

It's signing 2-3 £15million players plus wages, plus existing players demanding pay rises in line with the new additions, that we need to steer away from. Things need to grow naturally in that respect, but nows the time to buy a couple of marque players to supplement the squad.

As nuch as it galls me, this is probably true. The market is ridiculous and sometimes to move forward we may have to keep up.

Having said that, I would have thought that £10m-£12m for a player who had scored as many goals as he has, who is English (which commands a premium in the current situation), and is at a good age is probably in line with expectations.

£15m+ seems a lot of money for him, but if he represents an upgrade on our existing options (which I think he does) then he could well be worth the money.
