Yeah, it"s madness, i"m looking for a long shot to be pm one day, and although he"s out of the news lately, i think one David Beckham could get the popular vote, probably after an airing of "at home with the Beckhams" on tv, or David doing a week working in the nhs, nice little series, then standing for pm, maybe after a stint at London mayor, anything is possible now! I've been saying for a while: in order to make elections more 'interesting', how about the vote is like the X-factor and we refine it so it is done from the TV remote or mobile phone screen, so that people can just press a button and up pops your candidate. Still, the sudden change in governmental policy does kind of make you think if anyone in there really knows what they are doing. Wouldn't the education secretary know why they didn't have that policy in the first place? Yeah, you would have thought so, it makes you look back on politicians of old that you hated and think, they wern"t so bad!

I'm totally against quotas or positive discrimination and am, in fact, a huge advocate for meritocracy. However, I think you would agree, for example, that a man or woman should get the same pay for the same job? Or that a black, Asian, White or a person with a disability should be able to get a job and earn equally? God, I've let myself in for it here haven't I....these discussions can get quite deep. Like you I'm a big believer in meritocracy. However, there are issues with pure unfetted meritocracy. For example, the highest IQs in the world are with the East Asians and Jews. So should we let these two groups run all the countries in the world?....like they run the corporations? That's the conclusion of pure meritocracy....All of the top universities would basically be these two groups. Each country has enough of it's own intelligentsia of 120+ IQs who are smart enough to run their countries and also have the interests of their own states first and foremost. To to my mind, the motivation of the individual is also important. There is no point giving all the advantages to a Moriarty when you need a Sherlock.

As the whole point of these universities is to produce the best minds to improve the fortunes of the country first and humanity second. Private schools spend an awful lot of time hot housing their students to ensure they get into the top universities. It's not just the grade it's entrance exams and connections to key people at the university. Rather than lower the bar for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds why not create a state equivalent for them. Take the brightest and the best from deprived areas and offer them access to entrance exams courses during the school holidays in addition to their regular school work. Don't drop the bar lower a ladder instead.

Innate IQ is hard to train for if the test is designed properly. I would hope that it would be blind to wealth....that said, families that put the work in tend to have their wits about them too. Still, I know that because that idea isn't corruptible it wouldn't catch on. That said, I like your idea, it eases access without lowering standards. But we know this argument has been conceded to the left, along with pretty much every other social position.....it's all about quotas and diversity and inclusion. Rigor comes somewhere further down the list on priorities. Unless this rot is reversed the next generations will only suffer for it. Like Cleese said, it's all about managers swaying in the wind to the current cultural zeitgeist to protect their jobs......the accumulative affect is a downgraded society.

This again As you know Africans get a low score. Most Africans I know can spell rigour however.

A friend's daughter is very bright and goes to one of the top private girls school she is in the first year of A levels and has along with her classmates already been to Cambridge twice to get to know the tutors and courses. She and I both have a mutual friend who is a professor at Manchester University I get the feeling that Manchester is a shoe in for her subject to the grades. She is already being head hunted. Perhaps the Universities could be forced to run these hot house seminars if nothing else it would allow the kids access to the decision makers.

As for your pedantry, perhaps seemingly unlike you, they are also aware of alternative spellings. Attachment: rigor.JPG (149.80Kb)

They likely didn't expect a light to be shone quite so brightly on the issue. It's good PR to reinstate it - and bad PR not to - plus not particularly costly all things considered. A largely selfless campaign by Rashford in a time where it's often all about number one. You make a good point about the fickle nature of government decision making, but the decision itself makes a real difference for many poor families, so that at least is uplifting news.

Yes, Rashford seems a decent, humble guy who hasn't forgotten his beginnings. No one wants to think of kids going hungry.
