Watch that chance in the first half. Good strikers keep the ball rolling towards goal with a slight touch to keep it in their control. Not Benteke. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do, traps it, takes it in the direction he’s facing or the ball is moving in after he’s ‘controlled it’ (has he even controlled it?), and then takes a few touches away from goal, making the angle narrower. He’s done this so many times since he’s been with us it’s criminal. He is absolutely pony imo. I saw glimpses of showing purpose at the start of the season in the opposition half when running towards goal (even if he did take the ball or was jockeyed towards the corner flag) and last week, but I’m sorry, vs West Ham, and for £130k per week? We really are lumbered with a bad striker and player on the deck. Really bad actually. Never reads anything, is never even in the box when the ball flashes past and what annoys me more is when he chests the ball down for someone in the box and it isn’t near them. He then moans with his arms pointing out as if to say it was there for them when in reality it was several yards away from them (they’re possibly both to blame tbf) The one case he did have yesterday was when someone on the left didn’t square the ball to Benteke in the 6 yard box and instead missed. Was it MacArthur or Wilf? Can’t remember but Benteke is stealing a living. Good for one season but not worth a quarter of the money since. And I was wanting him back not long ago because Ayew is no central striker. What a sh1t show we’ll be struggling with again next season. Too many eggs in one basket because we didn’t scout anyone for the several seasons we knew striker was going to be an issue.

Another thing with him is that when he does get an opportunity, he always hits it where the goalkeeper is, not where he's not. I.e. straight at him! Absolute rubbish. Edited by southnorwoodhill (10 Feb 2019 12.38pm)

If we continue with Wilf on the left and Andros on the right, you'll never get the best out of him, because the ball doesn't get into the box quick enough. He's always having to stop and wait for it, and then deal with a centre half. Also worth pointing out that in terms of his movement, if McArthur had squared the ball properly on two occassions Benteke had got himself in position for a tap in. Maybe the two together would work, but I do worry it would leave us exposed in the middle. This is a decent post. Although Townend cuts inside, gets a cross in. Wilf never gets a cross in than him being further out than 6 yards from the near post. His left foot is too weak to cross balls with flight or at pace. But then there are the surprising balls flashed across goal or the ones where a full back surprisingly makes the goal line and, surprise surprise, Benteke is in the wrong place. He cannot read the bodies of his teammates or where they can or might get the ball to. He just takes up the position that he’s more likely to score from. Zero football intelligence. I remember the squared floor passes he received at Liverpool and chipped into the nearby terraced houses from 6 yards out. I don’t know what it takes to get through to him but if we haven’t so far, well.

Think it's safe to say that Benteke has a real problem playing in Roy's system. His job is to win high balls and then wait in the penalty box while our wingers and midfielders run around endlessly or pass the ball incessantly trying to thread a needle or get to the byeline. Benteke is a back post forward, but nearly all our crosses are low from the byeline and are cut out by the three defenders standing in front of him as they should be and he's just left waiting there. When Bats came on that approach looked more dangerous, but we also started hitting more long balls as we were desperate and actually hit in some decent earlier crosses. Thing is then there was no Benteke in the box and Bats showed that he cannot challenge a centre half for a long punt up the field. He clearly doesn't like playing with his back to a big centre half. Not a criticism, it's a genuine skill and one he doesn't possess.

Benteke was utter sh*te last year in terms of finishing. Not just for a spell, but the entire season. He was utterly devoid of confidence and must have missed 15 to 20 glorious chances, and many more half chances. He scored in preseason, then went back to the norm, then got injured. Expecting season 1 benteke to suddenly appear is a bit of a tall order.
Trump lost. Badly. Hahahahahahaha. |

Wrighty noted on MOTD why he needed the touch that makes his job more difficult, suggesting he would of taken it earlier giving the goalkeeper less chance to react. Looks like he is overthinking and not moving the ball fast enough where it should go for a goal.

You have to question whether these 2 have actually worked together on the training ground, particularly as these issues are recurring all this season ? These 2 are not the only ones, as the wingers and attackers look out of sync as well. In fact Wilf and Meyer look like the only 2 which could potentially have a partnership going but that might be limited because of game time for the latter.

It's insanity to compare Bats and Benteke. One is a player that any team would take, the other is a player we could not give away. We're stuck with Benteke, so I do hope a miracle occurs, and he regains some level of basic competence, but I'm not holding my breath. In the meantime, I want Bats to start every game to give us the best chance to avoid relegation. I'm fine with Benteke off the bench if we're losing late and need an extra forward, and Wickham and Ayew both have the flu.
