Any change in manager has to go hand-in-hand with investment in new players. Even with Eze and Mitchell starting the average age of the team last night was apparently over 30 (or very near it). Quite simply we do not seem to have the energy to play more than one game a week and there is a chronic lack of pace in the team. On that basis I still think the summer is the time for a change of manager. I don't think there are many who enjoy the way we've played most of this season or last, but given the current financial climate it feels more important than ever to stay in the PL, especially as there doesn't seem to be a queue of investors looking to save the club if we got into financial trouble again and Eze and Zaha are our only significant player assets. While our PL safety is not assured I saw enough against Sheffield Utd and Arsenal to feel confident we'll pick up enough points before the season is out (providing Wilf isn't injured for too long!)

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

You could argue the other way around - the club is sustaining because of that target, not despite it. It's certainly not killing it. Where is your evidence of young supporters turning away from choosing Palace as a team to support ? Edited by NEILLO (18 Jan 2021 2.04pm) I have my evidence, where is yours to disprove this point?

Parish went out and spent a ton of money to bring Eze into our squad to generate more offense, and not be so reliant on Wilf. Do you think Parish is pleased with what Roy is getting out of his large investment? We added Eze, and still rarely get one shot in a game. How about Bats? We use a valuable loan to bring him in, and he sits on the bench every game, even though we have no one else capable of scoring, or even getting a shot on goal. Do you think Parish is pleased with that piece of business? Past years, our bench was abysmal, and Roy kept us up with barely 11 players. This year, we have the strongest squad we've had under Roy, and if anything, we look much worse. Roy has run his course here, time to move on. The players have tuned him out. Hopefully we avoid relegation this year, give Roy a nice send off for a job well done, and get a new manager for next season.

Apropos Eze, he is only a young lad, this is this first season in the PL and perhaps he has exceeded expectations thus far. Mention was made of 'Bats'.Maybe there are those who are of the opinion that both Eze and 'Bats' were not specifically requested by Mr Hodgson but I have no evidence that they were signed against his wishes. A good mates two sons, both from the midlands originally and 21 and 24 years of age. Both had season tickets for the last 5 years and both decided last year enough was enough and have packed up watching Palace. Their own words, “bored to death”. The other, two young kids with a Chelsea supporting Dad and a Palace supporting Mum. Mum originally won the who supports who argument until the family went to Chelsea v Palace match. At the end of the match the kids asked Mum if they could start supporting Chelsea. So, as little evidence as it is, that is my recent experience. Worse still that is two young kids and two young adults both deciding Palace aren’t worth watching. If most palace fans know 4 similar people then our future fan base ain’t looking that good. Hope you’ve got some decent feel good stories to help us in these troubled times.

I'm so glad someone has posted a reasonable argument to back up Roy. It's frustrating that recently people have just been claiming he deserves praise for being from Croydon, having 40 years experience, and most irritatingly of all - achieving a 0-0 draw with 10th place Arsenal. I agree that Roy should be keeping the club in a safe mid table position. I'm not even that fussed about the style of play - just that Roy is too conservative with his tactics and substitutions especially against teams lower down the table when we need to chase a game. Where we digress is what the definition of "safe mid-table" is. 14th last season was acceptable but below expectation, our second lowest premiership position since promotion (although Pardew got us to a cup final). Between 14th and 11th is about what we should be expecting. The issues are that we are on the decline. Final positions of 11th, 12th, and 14th show that. In the 2020 calendar year we achieve 35 points, with a catastrophic end of the season. Relegation form - not safe mid-table form, over a prolonged period. He should have gone then. A couple of wins catching Southampton and Manchester United off guard and underprepared help paper the cracks, but 23 points is a reasonable total at the half way stage. Only 3 points above were we need to be to survive. But if 14th to 11th is mid-table, then mealy surviving is unacceptable. We've currently won 2 of our last 12. Including very disappointing performances vs Burley, Newcastle, Liverpool, Villa, Wolves, and City. Those wins came against the team in 19th place (with 10 men + and own goal), and 20th. Something has to be done to top this accelerating decline. At 73 and with 6 months left on his contract. To put it into context, Hodgson is definitely too old to get a mortgage, and would be very fortunate to even get a small loan. No sensible business would invest millions of pound in him - especially based on the performance over the last 12 months. We've got a reasonable cushion, let's give someone else ago - it would give everyone a lift. In recent weeks, many of the players have been hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons, Luka's party, Eze's visit to QPR, Meyer's exit, and Batshuyai's fight. Issues in isolation wouldn't be that bad. This doesn't seem to be happening at other clubs and must be a red flag? I'd prefer a manager that would be less of a "yes man" and put more pressure on the board for the sake of the club. Whilst player age, contracts, signings, youth progression, might not be in the managers remit, it would still be in the interest of the club to employ someone who takes a stronger stance on the matters. Mate - excellent, well reasoned and balanced post..!! All things are circular and have a shelf life - Roy was great for us when first appointed he bought stability and an element of progression. For that we should/will always be grateful. But as you rightly say that is on the wane now and now is the time to bring in someone to freshen things up. On yesterday as others have said City are a very good side, in very good form and IMO will go on from here and win the Title. But that doesn't excuse us not even given it a go - it seems to me that Roy just set up from the off yesterday not to get hammered. His post match confirms that - when he said "at half time I didn't see us losing by that heavy margin"..!! If your Manager accepts at half time you are going to get beat - but says boys let's try and not just get hammered - what sort of message is that..?? Where is the inspiration for the players - inspiration must come from the Manager - if he's "waving the white flag" what message does that transmit to the team. This quickly follows on from Roy's equally odd post match comments against Leicester where he referred to it took an "apoplectic half time message" from Ray Lewington. There seems to be a theme developing here in that Roy himself can no longer inspire the team. As I have said on here before IMO he has lost the dressing room and that is now being reflected in performances. Unlike some suggestions on here I don't "hate" Roy I really don't - in fact I respect him for all he has achieved and latterly with Palace - but I very much sit in the camp it ain't working any longer and it is time for a change to a younger Manager. We have a series of fixtures coming up where we have a good chance of picking up points - that coupled with a change in Manager, some fresh ideas and giving everyone a lift could/would produce real dividends. If that doesn't happen then we are in for more of the same - whilst we may survive it will be hard to watch and very much an underachievement in terms of end of season position. COYP

Whilst entertaining football would be lovely I think most are aware of the points you have raised. For me, I am quite happy with pragmatic football given our position and often feel a certain smugness when we do (and we have) get results against teams with far superior resources to ours. The moans from their fans are a cherry on top for me. What is worrying however, or more so unforgivable, is that we are now seeing far too many performances from our team which lack any belief, effort (some characterise this as passion) or even the slightest notion of attacking intent. I do not expect us to turn into peak Barcelona overnight, nor do I expect to see that on the pitch week in week out and can take the losses when they happen (which they inevitably will), however it is criminal for me that we are playing games in which we are not even competitive. We have been a Premier League team for years now and last night was a prime example of another of our weekend games being a non-event whereby no shots on target, no real attacks whatsoever and backs against the walls but still conceding goals seemed like a foregone conclusion most could have predicted. Completely sucks any joy out or even defeats the purpose of following a football team. You seem to totally disregard Silvertops excellant post. Roys remit is to keep us in the Premier, how he does it, is of little concern to the owners, who see staying there vital to the longterm growth of the club. Man City away wouldnt of been a game targetted to reap points, especially without Zaha and Schlupp. So Roys set up was the same as in the 2 previous seasons at City, but this time it didnt work.

If we survive in the PL this season I suspect Mr Hodgson will continue on the managerial 'Throne' beyond the end of this campaign. If this scenario unfolds I envisage vast swathes of our supporters being somewhat unhappy and indeed disappointed that a change was not made.
