I think you're on the right lines here. I suspect there are many "shy Brexiteers" than there are "shy Remainians". Why? Because we've been browbeaten (by these rampant pro-EU from a particular political persuasion) into thinking that the former is nasty, racist, xenophobic and most importantly shameful.

All it's done is generate an undercurrent of resentment. The eroding support for Labour in their devout northern strongholds is testament to that: the elitist middle-class Labour just doesn't represent these people any more, and doesn't understand them.

But they don't like being taken for fools. A "principled" Labour leader, rampantly anti-EU in the past dramatically U-turns. A muted Labour campaign with no enthusiasm. I think people will connect the dots, see casual Labour collusion with the big banks and (gasp!) Tories and see it as a betrayal. They'll punish them in the ballot box, and this is a way to do it without (as an election would) removing power from the left and handing it to the right.

They'll never tell us that though. Because it's shameful to admit it. Leave the EU? That's for racists.

I thought it was because, as the independent said in my earlier link, that the eu imposes rules like straight bananas, or covering up barmaids cleavage.

I'm looking forward to a 'brexit will cure alzheimers ' headline in the express over the coming days. People have been dripfed nonsense about the EU for so many years that they belive it.
If we are to leave the EU it should be made clear that it's to try and kick neoliberalism in the balls.

Incredibly silly statement to make. This is pretty much why the remain camp is losing.

Step 1 - identify all Brexiteers as politically identical and thus tar them with the same brush.

Step 2 - patronise them by telling them they aren't able to make up their mind properly by themselves.

Step 3 - make generic statement how [insert noun here] will be ruined but then don't say how.

It's like arguing against a robot...

Brexit isn't a cure-all for all ailments: - No its not, but this is a popular assumption by the remain camp and a key reason as to why they are losing the argument. Assuming that Brexiteers are just cloned versions of Gove, Johnson and Farage stomping around the country doing their best to blame the EU so they can get some personal gain. Brexit is not a cure for all ailments, but nor is staying in the EU either.

Feel your life is missing something or not as good as it used to be? Oh,I know,must be because of those EU migrants...Tosh of the highest order.Bit like the ordinary Protestants and Catholics historically being conned into blaming each other in N Ireland for life's ills.

This is just rhetoric on the highest order, comparing EU migration to the troubles in NI as well, I pity you. If you want to debate this topic properly you should retract this statement, we can go from there.

I think you are right, Johnson and Gove probably don't overly care about the NHS, however at least 'we' the British people have the ability to remove these people from office and put in someone who does. Your solution would be to keep power away from elected officials in the UK and give it to people who we can't hold to account and just hope they do a better job, great idea! Also, while talking about the NHS, voting to stay in the EU would also sign the UK up to the TTIP which has the potential to allow US companies (renowned for commitment for free healthcare) to purchase parts of the NHS, oh goodie!

Oh lord really? I was born in 1989, well after the days of empire, but no, you are right, my Eurosceptism must be down to this reason and nothing to do with the worsening state of the European economy, the way the EU treats the developing world and yet another looming Eurozone disaster.

The EU has many many faults but a looming spectre of possible Brexit really is like heading the wrong way down a one way street at 90mph...scary indeed...
