When 2TK stood up and ranted about punishment for the protesters who overstepped and for online punishments, he himself wasn’t expecting the harshness of the sentences. I mean he’s a lawyer himself and no where in history are there any precedents for some of the bird given for certain reasons.
What has happened is he’s instructed police to put the case and a set of judges to hand down the sentences. A bit like having a cat who keeps catching birds and rodents and bringing them home as a present. No matter how much you tell them to stop they keep doing it to please you.
Behind closed doors I would imagine a swathe of even his own MPs are concerned about the perception of labour and moreover the very people and families affected by the court results. Let alone the fear that has been driven into the public they are meant to serve, not control!
The first conviction and sentence set in motion an unstoppable wrong and I would not be surprised to see all sentences appealed and HMG and the establishment proved to have been over zealous. It only takes 1 or 2 to win appeals for the whole house of cards to come crashing down. There must be something in the offing as no one has asked for trial by jury which, and I stand to be corrected is a right still available in our system. Not sure about criteria but that in itself is strange.
2TK basically picked his words very badly and his instruction to the legal profession might well have been misinterpreted and that’s why we see what’s happening.
I just do not see any benefit to his or their standing and like climate change and the is it racist argument cancellation and jail sits greedily at the trap door for anyone to openly criticise what’s happening.

Asking the CPS to proceed at speed is another matter but handing down sentences intended to warn others is nothing new.

We weren’t there to witness everything that happened but I doubt very much that he has been jailed for that long for just one statement!

It must have been for a sustained attack which threatened to result in serious disorder. Deterring others from such behaviour being the purpose of the punishment.

Expressing your ideas clearly and freely is not, and never will be, a problem. Inciting violence or making statements of hatred which risk causing others to break the peace, is a problem. It’s illegal.

It’s not what you say that on its own is the issue. It’s where, when and how that can become an issue.
