Islam has a particular combination of problems for the west that other religions do not:

1. Islam is not just a religion but a political ideology and system of law, Those 3 things cannot exist in isolation (for long at least). Islam will always strive to take over where it exists as a moral duty whether peacefully or otherwise.

2. Islam has no central church or Pope who can decree against certain interpretations or fatwas etc. This makes an enlightenment equivalent very difficult.

3. Mohammed was the perfect man so his example cannot be questioned but can be used to justify all of his terrible deeds as a warlord.

4. Islam reacts extremely violently when challenged therefore people are afraid to criticise especially in public life e.g. killing people over cartoons

5. Anti western values are "baked into" the books especially as regards the treatment of women, homosexuals and sexualization of children.

6. Islam is entirely intolerant of non-muslims and apostates and sees these as inferior at best and enemies at worse.

7. Peaceful interpretations of the holy books are generally superseded by more violent and extreme ones due to the nature of these being superseded (Abrogation)

8. Islam is generally practised by people originating from 3rd world countries. Make of that what you will.

I'm not an expert on any of this but these are but these are the issues that seem to continuously come up and nobody has good answers for.
