Hurrah - a glimmer of understanding at last. Don’t be so silly. I’ve always understood how the EU functions. It’s you who has been obsessed with arguing that chalk ought to be cheese. The EU is not a national parliament. It is an assembly of the willing who recognise the benefits of handling a variety of issues together.

I just noticed that Croatia has just become the 20th country to join the euro and Schengen treaty. I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned before. I was in Croatia during the spring a lovely country and hopefully this will not have an adverse impact on them. A big moment and a fresh start for the small Balkan nation of 4 million people, that captured international attention three decades ago as the site of a brutal war. Their football is pretty good too.

Is it? Well it's not a democratic assembly. The members of the EU are all democracies. They are represented in the Council by their leaders. They assemble to willingly delegate some matters to the EU institutions because they believe it’s in the best interests of their people to do so. Referendums on membership, and on major changes, have been standard practical. Something I believe to be unnecessary. . So, like all democratic processes, it has its own quirks but can still be regarded as a type of democracy .

A nation in which the price of almost everything has just gone up, in which people were already struggling and which has now voluntarily given up its financial independence. Oh and joined Schengen. Meaning a whole host of people smugglers must be eyeing it up as the next destination for their travel brochures. I love Croatia. Was married there, had my kids christened there and will hopefully end my days under its skies. But today, I am heartbroken for it. Swapped Belgrade for Brussells. For shame.

You said you understood but you clearly don’t when you con tinue to post this type of thing. The laws in the UK are, and were when we were members of the EU, always made democratically. Directives were implemented by local legislation. Regulators made directly as a consequence of the Treaties did not need implementation but were nonetheless democratic as the Treaties that created them were. Everything political in the UK is done democratically. Brexit happened because Parliament passed a bill enacting Article 50.

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled people make poor decisions and reach erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the metacognitive ability to recognise their mistakes. The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their own abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. Actual competence may weaken self-confidence, as competent individuals may falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding.
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

Actual competence may weaken self-confidence, as competent individuals may falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. How exciting. You have just found a 23 year old theory and it's so fascinating to you that you had to put it onto two threads. I have noticed you are resorting to ad hominem attacks. As we know, there is a reason for that. However, WE is probably someone that is affected by the other element of the DK effect that was postulated. He thinks reasoning is simple and therefore underestimates his capability for reasoned thought and doesn't recognise how weak others can be. According to Psychology Today: The Dunning-Kruger effect is commonly invoked in online arguments to discredit other people’s ideas. The only problem is that the Dunning-Kruger effect itself is wrong. You will no doubt have found that out when you researched the issue before posting, which is something that one would naturally do to avoid a DK like effect. To quote a different Psychology Today article: To avoid falling prey to the Dunning-Kruger effect, people can honestly and routinely question their knowledge base and the conclusions they draw, rather than blindly accepting them.
