Does anyone on here know what the content of those conversations are. Unless you do, it may well be that Derry is recommending one or two, or more and Roy is choosing not to bother. You can’t defend managers decisions with facts you don’t know. I agree that unless you are Chelsea or similar you are unlikely to pull more than 2 of 3 out the hat, but I find that to currently have an U23 side with no-one capable of being tried out even in cups and meaningless matches (like end of last season) to be a damning indictment of either our system or our manager. You don't seem to have an understanding of how academy and reserve football works. Its basically a learning area for potential players, which in all clubs is littered with players that don't make the grade and are discarded, its a tough school to impress in. We have been set back by Jordan having a hissy fit over the Bostock saga and disbanded the academy.

AWB would never have played if we weren’t desperate. His positioning and lack of discipline getting drawn into the middle make confident of that. Same with Mitchell. Roy likes the finished article or players like RLC it’s pretty certain is a matter of when and not if. Ask Roy to play cards for a fiver and he’d try and lower the stakes to a shilling.

With respect Rudi, you are speculating. "never have played"? It was a matter of time surely. Same with Mitchell. All this talk about the manager not liking youth or flair players, or having favourites is complete fantasy. Why would a manager, any manager, play anyone other than what he assesses as the best for the match? If a manager really had favourites, or played people out of position, or selected players that were not as good as others, and did so on a consistant basis, he would not manage a football team for very long. At any level.

Roy always goes for the safe steady option and will not risk younger players unless absolutely necessary (eg.AWB). He is not interested in the long term future... his job depends on results in the here and now and prem survival is success for his career. However we cannot sustain a squad of overpaid journeymen and sooner or later we will come unstuck. Our American sugar daddies have lost interest. Our academy used to be so strong but now Im not so sure.

He’s brought through Tyrick Mitchel this year into the first team and is now choosing him ahead of Van Aanholt. Furthermore, he’s bought Eberechi Eze, a 22 year old dynamic, flair player into the set up which shows me he’s not too afraid to bring in youth. I agree. Anyone wanting Roy out can think again, he will see this season out and possibly start the next now. He gets the squad organised and we should have beaten Arsenal last night. We are definitely looking more solid now at the back with Tomkins and Mitchell returning. Thought the young left back is starting to settle and apart from one ball he gave away in a dangerous position played really well. What’s more he can cross the ball too. Roy just needs to let a couple of more youngsters to come through the ranks and get some game time, and it will be job done.

Having the same back 4 is massive and I think a big reason why we look more solid after months of having to constantly change the backline. I definitely agree about Mitchell. I thought before he looked like he could do with a loan spell to get more experience, but he's come back in and he seems to have gone up a level and he is showing more confidence about getting forward. He'll make mistakes, but I'm really excited now to see how develops alongside Eze. With regard to youth, have we ever had a PL manager who has trusted in our youth players unless they had to? Most PL teams only have one or two youth players in and around their first XI as teams these days have 25-man squads to keep happy. One area I would like to see give youth chance is on the wings though, as with Schlupp now out we only have Andros and Eze available, with possibly PvA and Ayew as square pegs.

Cool.
