I was at the game and like pretty well everyone there was frustrated by the VAR hold-ups.

I have just watched the highlights and can anyone tell me why Edouard's goal was reviewed by VAR? I couldn't see anything untoward, or are we getting to the point where every goal has to be forensically examined?

Just caught up with the video of the second Eze penalty not given clearly his trailing leg hooked away.

Poor that is not difficult to see.

The telling thing for me is that Ahamada and Richards are “unproven” a year after we spent substantial sums bringing them in. That tells me Roy doesn’t rate them.

I'm guessing that Richards was bought partly as cover and secondly to slot in when one of our current centre back pairing is sold

Any capable opposition manager will have realised by now that the route to our goal is past our distinctly lack lustre full backs and via crosses which our centre halves don't defend effectively. It's a real problem for Hodgson from a tactical viewpoint.

To be fair, Everton looked well organised and worked very hard throughout. They took their chances well. I think we could have played better especially in the first half. We might well have had a second penalty - I still don't see why it was denied or why Eduoard's goal took so long to confirm? Furthermore, when are we next going to score from a corner? Overall, I was disappointed with the final result but enjoyed the game.

Can’t argue too much with this assessment. The telling thing for me is that Ahamada and Richards are “unproven” a year after we spent substantial sums bringing them in. That tells me Roy doesn’t rate them. The others are young and I don’t think Roy is a big fan of youth either! It feels like there’s a disconnect somewhere between Roy and Dougie. Effectively we have a first team squad of 15 players at best whom Roy is prepared to play. We can’t afford to keep paying several million for players the manager isn’t prepared to play. We need to ship these guys out. I’d settle for 1 signing in January who would be guaranteed a place, ideally a goal scorer or failing that a right back.

I think you are correct, that is why as we dont seem to have funds to purchase enough that we would like, Paddy who has coached and bought through many, as Hughes and Jairo have contracts finishing at the end of the year, Phillips, Ozoh and Boateng would be the obvious back up CM players

The game yesterday could have gone either way, as many of our games could have so far this season.
We're not a Man City who will be crusing along 3-0 up at half time.
We can't even go two ahead in games , other than v Burnley in the last minute.
That means the games are frequently in the balance even if we are playing well and one goal ahead.
With Olise and Eze back hopefully there will now be more games where we can pull 2 goals ahead and put some distance between ourselves and the opposition.
Perhaps even get a third if the opposition try and attack us and leave gaps, but I mustn't be greedy.

So, where do you expect these two players to play?

Ahamada essentially plays in the Lerma and Doucoure roles. He is currently behind Hughes in the pecking order of replacements if one or both are injured. He was injured for part of this season. He has had a couple of 20 minute sub appearances since returning from injury.

As for Richards, he's not going to replace either Guehi or Andersen in the 1st XI. He's not a RB and as Midland has suggested, he'll be the replacement for Guehi or Andersen when the first of those leave.

Another home game against another ordinary team where the goals and points were gifted and one again showing that under the current ownership, we will not be any better than a middle/lower third premiership team.
Sadly our two classy centre halves cannot compensate for a captain who is past it at this level and a left back who needs to work on his defensive game and positional sense.
Another game where the need for a proper centre forward was glaring.
Roy is clearly a very decent man, but why expose yourself to a barrage of criticism, working for a bloke like Parish who is not prepared to properly improve the starting eleven over his beloved academy ?
In January, Mr Freedman will probably go and get us another goalkeeper.

Have to agree with everything you said. I've been say for years now Ward should be moved on, clearly past his best at this level and Mitchell is just undisciplined in his left back role. To Parish, success at this level is survival and he will be reluctant to move from this model via through spending on players or managers. I'm not having a swipe at him (he did after all save the club from oblivion) and he has the right to spend the way he sees fit. Unfortunately, we tend to reward loyalty before talent.
We're a mid table (10th. to 15th.) side and that's all we will ever be unless an ounce of ambition in injected into the club. Our bitterest rivals have shown us that it can be done.

I think you are expecting too much from those young players.

Phillips needs to experience Championship football first as does Rak Sakyi). I was disappointed he went to League 1 again

Ozoh needs to be loaned out for 1st team football in Championship or League 1. playing PL 2 isn't good enough. John Kymani Gordon has great in PL2 but hasn't really pushed on when playing in League 2.

Boating is alittle more interesting, as he playing for Dundee in the Scottish PL. So he is playing against the likes of Rangers and Celtic.

No I don't see either of your statements as being correct.
1. Doucoure came off with a hamstring issue against Burnley and only trained on Friday. Roy sensibly didn't want to start him.
2. There is a big difference between being fit and match fit. Olise may well have been fit but not having played at all this season was unlikely to have been match fit. When players have been out for that long you don't suddenly start them and expect them to perform.
3. For those who want Richards at RB, he's played there for us and didn't convince.
4. Franca still isn't ready. I expect he will be at some point later in the season but not this side of the New Year IMO.

Hodgson started what he considered (and I tend to agree) was his best XI given the circumstances. One might genuinely debate whether Clyne should have played instead of Ward, but other than that, I really don't see who else Hodgson could have started with.

It was the starting XI I expected and was happy with given the limitations.

Then we're going to have to agree to disagree..!!

My issue with Roy ATM is that he is starting players irrespective of how badly they are playing/performing.

Ward is a prime example - there was an instance yesterday where he got absolutely rinsed (again) and he was trying to get back but looked like he was running in treacle..!!

Hughes is simply not Prem standard - too lightweight - defensively yesterday he was awful - which culminated in him not tracking his runner for their 3rd goal.

Schlupp is not a left sided attacking player - as I've said before I'm still not sure what he is - other than a half decent bench utility player.

I get that some other players are untried - but if you don't try them when other players are not performing how are you going to find anything out about them - and how do they gain experience..??

Therein lies my issue with Roy ATM - clearly players in certain positions aren't good enough he has other/younger options but won't give them a go..!!

Look it's not a Roy thing - I was one that supported he should be given another year after what he achieved last season - but ATM he seems to have descended back into "old Roy" rather than the Roy of last season that got the best out of younger players as in Eze and Olise..!!

His recent comments on younger players tells you all you need to know about his current mindset on younger players - hence continuing to play under performing elder/more experienced players.

On the injuries - get the whole thing about being match fit etc - my personal view is that you are fit enough to be on the bench you're fit enough to be playing..!!

Even if you allow for putting them on the bench to start with - then make the Sub's early when clearly things aren't working don't wait until 60 odd minutes and you are losing and chasing the game..!!

Look we played some good stuff yesterday and IMO Everton were there for the taking - but poor initial team selection - exacerbated by making substitutions cost us..!! And that's down to Roy..!!

It's a personal opinion - not asking everyone to agree with me - but that's the way I saw yesterday..!!

On another subject so far as I can see no one has mentioned Eze's penalty shout when he got booked for diving - VAR replays showed clear contact - so why wasn't it referred for review..?? Worse still why did the booking for diving still stand..??

Just another example of VAR inconsistencies that are getting so infuriating and make no sense..!!

All of that said there were signs yesterday of good things to come..!!
