Well, the way I saw it, we looked like an experienced Premier League team playing against a willing and enthusiastic newcomer lacking in quality. Burnley are consistently making mistakes at the back. So it was no surprise that they conceded two cheap goals. They also struggle to turn possession into goals. I think our gameplan was to pick them off and win the match which we duly did. Burnley could certainly not be considered unlucky, just not good enough. Palace will probably play better in other games and lose. But yesterday did enough to get the points. While it's true that the team have reverted back to a more pragmatic style, you can't expect to lose Olise, Zaha and Eze without there being an impact. Exactly how I saw it. We were in cruise control for most of the game. Not our best performance by any stretch but even without having much of the ball you could see the gulf in class.

We already have three away wins in which the opponents have failed to score. That is better than the team has achieved in any of the most recent four full seasons and just one off the record for a year Looking at the expected GF vs expected GA, this game was just the third when we have a better expected goals than our opponents - and only marginally in this case (1.3 v 1.1). The only two games where we were significantly better than the opposition were the wins against Sheffield United and Wolves and we could probably expect to have been on 11 or 12 points. Everton, next up, would be on around 18 if they could put the ball in the net

Good post, mate. We out-noused them, didn't we. Another three points: well nice.

The job yesterday was to get the win. Burnley were desperate to get their first home win and climb out of the relegation zone. They were always going to give it their best shot against a Palace team without its creative players. Palace made sure they got the win so job done. They did it by scoring two excellent goals as well. Ayew’s persistence to win the ball & cross for Schlupp to knock in was commendable. And Eze’s calm pass into the path of Mitchell (though I don’t think it was meant for him) for the second goal was sublime. It reminded of Pele’s pass for Jairzinho in the 1970 World Cup final… Yes, nice comparison: perfectly weighted and saying "Hit me!"

Reading the negative comments on the performance takes my back to the last game FDB was in charge. We played away to Burnley totally dominated the game created the most chances played great football but lost. I felt Saturday's performance was controlled and at no stage did we have to come out of our initial defensive shape to go and try and force the game and try and score. The only change in terms of shape was when we brought on Richards to play 3 centre backs and push up the full backs to restrict the room for their wide players. This snuffed out any remaining threat and got Mitchell forward to secure the 3 points.

The big question is whether we'll continue to play like that once Olise and Eze are both fit and starting again. If we do then I'll be at the front of the queue complaining, but as it is we have very little to offer going forward without them and the three points was necessary to put further space between us and the bottom three. Aside from a relatively solid defensive display I thought Ahamada provided some real energy when when he came on.

Please do not forget to take into account when considering Palace's expected goals statistics, that we have Edouard and Mateta up front. Expectations should be adjusted accordingly.

I've thought that 3 at the back could be a viable alternative if necessary. Good to see Mitchell venturing forward rather than staying behind the halfway line. Which leads me to an oft repeated refrain from myself: if Parish genuinely wants to fill his shiny new stand and welcome 34000 fans, he ought to see to it that the team offers a bit more entertainment value to sitting deep, offering 65% possession to the opposition. I venture that fans want to see Palace players on the ball, not the other way round.

If that means having less possession than the opposition but being more effective with it, I for one am happy with that.

Edited by Willo (06 Nov 2023 9.12am) Without meaning to be patronising to our manager it's nice to see such enjoyment from someone who's been involved in the game for his whole life and Roy seems to radiate joy in our achievements rather than any kind of triumphalism over the opponents.
