Not disputing the fact that they did - just the assumption that they’d still be there now to be a bit fantastical based on plenty of precedent re. all the other countries we once ‘ran’ and have since had to leave/hand over power to in the century since. And a lot of those were in far less volatile regions. Just not a realistic scenario IMO Edited by SW19 CPFC (12 Oct 2023 12.57pm) Not now no. An interesting line of counterfactual history though. Long opinion piece, but a worthwhile read. Certainly a welcome break from the usual media sensationalism.
It was a long opinion piece, one I probably agreed with 90-95 percent on and the guy is obviously a good human being.

Well, my response to that is the actual history. The British did rule Palestine and the situation was far calmer than is the reality since we walked away. I'm not going there as to whether the British should have been there, that's a whole different topic that I'd probably agree on. There is the reality that the origins of what we have now came with the Balfour Declaration in 1917 and the power of foreign capital influencing what the British supported in that region.....Hundreds of thousands of Jews started moving to Palestine in those proceeding decades. Essentially the British absolving itself of responsibility allowed other historical ethnic interests to create the lop sided reality of Palestine....which is on a fast track to just becoming all of Israel. My Grandad joined up in 33. Was in the BEF - evacuated at Dunkirk. Was in the 7th Armoured across North Africa, then Italy. 45 sent to Greece. 49 finally demobbed from Palestine. He said he had never signed up to shoot civilians - was none too happy with Greece or the Jews or Arabs in Palestine. He was a little bit more than unlucky - although luckier than his dead comrades in arms. I'm not sure much truth about Greece or Palestine is that palatable still.

I remember my Grandfather and greatuncle telling me wartime stuff that differed quite a lot from what you'd expect. Jewish terrorists were bombing and killing us towards the end. I suspect that people like your Grandfather had a much better handle on what was really happening than us plebs being fed the mainstream news.

Nice to know, that the EPL/EFL are doing their bit(albeit, with a 'large' nudge from the Govt) . . . [Link]
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

There is a suggestion in your posts that the British just walked away from Palestine. That is, it was labelled "too hard" or "can't be bothered". I am not sure this is accurate. We were a spent force, exhausted by conflict, close to bankrupt and living on rations in rubble. We were also under the effective control of our bankers, the US, which was and remains all but 100% Zionist. The pressure became intolerable when British soldiers were murdered and our post war electorate said enough is enough. In any event, shooting German soldiers was one thing; but the Tommies had no stomach to shoot Jews, especially after what they had witnessed in Dachau etc. I genuinely believe we felt we were leaving the place to the international community who, collectively, would see some degree of mugging through. At least, that was how they may have justified their pathetic retreat at the time. Under the Mandate, we may have continued to rule an uneasy alliance where the division caused by their hatred for each other would have only just been out balanced by their unified hatred of us. However, WWII and the shift in power to the US put paid to all that. Like most issues we have today, much of this problem is a consequence of bad US foreign policy. The region was replaced by imperfect governance but one informed by centuries in the job, by another that was wholly partisan, had got rich too quick, and was ill prepared for the responsibilities that came with supreme power.
