He's used as an attritional midfield minded forward by Vieira. Unlikely that he will get many goals from the position he is asked to play. When the game opens up a bit then Olise comes on. That, as far as I can tell, is how it currently works. If you want goals, lack of them, missed opportunities, then save your ire for Edouard and Mateta. Moreover the current tactical set-up that has yet to find the best formula for the players we have on the books.

Ayew was bought as an attacker but has developed and now used as much more than that. He breaks up play, has quick feet, is always available for the out pass, relieves pressure by drawing clever fouls and runs at defenders causing them to foul him in attacking positions. Not for nothing does he often have 3 marking him. His weakness is coolness in front of goal, which is clearly being worked on.

He was stand out MOTM yesterday and it’s about time he was appreciated a little more!

Those MOTD highlights were awful. Editor is clearly a Newcastle fan. Made them look completely dominant for most of the game which was not the case. Not a single mention of palace in the post match analysis. Not sure why I bothered watching to just hear Alan moan. Predictable

Everything I expected, not many teams go there and have nineteen attempts I can tell you.

Why do you think the opposition foul him then? The officiating is ruining his game the same as Zaha and Eze.

Haven’t seen the highlights but I watched the game yesterday. Did the clear offside as the free kick that led to the disallowed goal get showed and discussed?

I haven’t heard this mentioned by anyone!!

Don't know how you watch the last two games and believe that. We have no patterns to open teams up. Any chance comes with the other team caught up the pitch

Our problems are defending.

He is an average player who creates nothing, we are basically playing with two attacking players, Wilf and either of the mediocre CFs, no wonder Wilf gets frustrated, Ayew twice had the chance to put Wilf in and wasted it with two poor shots, Eze should be playing where Ayew was moved two when Olise came on

Having managed the rarity of ignoring all football yesterday to watch MoTD blissfully unaware of the results I can confirm ‘no’.

Comforting to hear that we were a lot better than the highlights suggested, a chance a piece for JP and Edouard was the impression left.

Newcastle have been somewhat formidable at home under Howe, it’s very unglamorous but at this early stage I am willing to adopt an allardyce-esque perspective of ‘respecting the point’. We all remember the FdB start and the misery that provoked.

The only concern from me is that it’s looking competitive down the bottom end of the table where we are very familiar with and love him to pieces to but JSchlupp starting consistently in midfield can’t be a great sign.

COYP too early really to start worrying unnecessarily and a few decent points on the board with 1/2 of our games being against ‘Top four’ contenders and another big side next week, although I’m hopeful there!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Rubbish, apart from the second half at Man City, where Haaland was unbelievable and PVs mad subs against Brentford, they have been superb, as they were yesterday

A real mystery what Vieira sees in Schlupp in the position he plays him in. Perhaps Vieira believes he can coach Schlupp into the role. Or perhaps Vieira sees no other alternative, such is the paucity of the bench. Schlupp has his attributes, but holding midfield dynamo general isn't his game.

Of course it wasn't.
We had four less attempts at their goal and they highlighted every single one of theirs from every single possible angle, I think they showed two of our nineteen.
