You are not allowed to deliberately shield the ball & deny an opponent an opportunity to play the ball. Before anyone shouts at me, yes, i know, players do shield the ball when going out for a goal kick, this, believe it or not, is still a foul, just no-one bothers with it anymore. Many years ago I know , but if you did not have actual control of the ball and blocked access to the ball it was a plain obstruction and illegal .

Rumours Arsenal offering him a new contract. We cant compete with that, even if they don't make the ECL. He has always been there and will likely want to stay. I suspect we will be used as we have been used in the past, i.e., as a device for upping his wages. Obviously I don't know what the lad is thinking, but I cant imagine he'll stay under any circumstance. He's refused to sign a contract and recently was talking about his lack of opportunities at Arsenal. He's seen a very promising career stall, where a lot of his U21 teammates have progressed with regular premiership football. He has barely played all season, and is only getting some game time now as Lacazette is recovering from COVID. Arsenal have no choice but to go out and sign a couple of strikers in the summer. all of which will be ahead of him.

First time I've seen That enforced. Normally, defenders go down and jump on the ball, picking it up and presuming they've been Fouled. Doesn't explain why it went The other way later in The game either !

Agreed. We don't need a 20 goal a season striker that is a luxury we need 2 strikers who can get into double figures and the rest of the team chipping in with goals as well. A bit fussy of you, Badger. Any style of finish would do me!

When I saw yesterday's line up, I was surprised but on reflection thought it clever. Southampton would have prepared their strategy, expecting Ward-Prowse to do his usual job of niggling Wilf. Him being benched through them into a muddle, and they didn't know what to expect, so went into their shell. A rested Wilf, with a point to prove, then came on with Southampton on the back foot hoping to protect a lead. The rest is history. Surely you mean "threw them into....." Just saying.....lol

This needing a 20 goal a season striker is such a lazy comment. It's as if they are in abundance and we could get one.
We had a 20+ goal striker in 2004/5, Andrew Johnson. Still got relegated

Also by playing Wilf up against the centre backs Ward Prowse was not in a position to do the the niggling, while Wilf's good close control made it difficult for the centre backs to get too tight. A few other points mentioned in this post : - Olise did seem very reluctant to use his right foot yesterday (was that the one that was injured ?) and it made it easier for the left back who more or less knew that he would be cutting inside.

And Ayew seems to spend most of the game shielding the ball by sticking his backside into a would-be tackler's groin - which would certainly deter me from competing for it.

But Ayew, usually has some control on the ball by being able to put his foot on it and keep it in play. Shielding a ball out of play, for instance with little or no intention of playing the ball , and actually not controlling the ball, whilst blocking access to that ball ,is obstruction. But rarely if ever penalised.

I'd suggest that there is a very real difference between protecting the ball for your own possession of it to purely just stopping an opponent from playing it for whatever reason best suits you - that's obstruction.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Shielding is defined as a player placing himself between an opponent and the ball as long as the ball is kept within playing distance and the player does not hold off the opponent with his arms or body.
