Just to add.. I saw Tim Dillon at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire last night. A rip roaring affair. Went down a storm.

I seem to remember Marlon Brando's Oscar award (must have been for The Godfather). He sent an Native American girl in full tribal dress to receive it, who then castigated the USA for their treatment of NAs.

well done Marlon. The treatment of the peoples of small indigenous tribes was, and still is, shocking.

Yes, I remember is getting a mixed response, but realistically it gave a voice to someone who had likely been deprived of one, so is a noteworthy moment..

If Will Smith hadn't reacted violently nobody would've considered this tame joke even vaguely of note compared to any others on the night. And again, the likes of Ricky Gervais routinely say much worse at these events. Would Will Smith have hit him too, or just a diminutive comedian like Chris Rock?

Looks like Ricky is in agreement:

Ricky Gervais slams claims that Jada Pinkett Smith's alopecia is a 'disability' as he defends Chris Rock's 'tame' Oscars joke - [Link]

And to clarify, on the wider issue of free speech, I'm personally more than fine with people saying precisely what they want, when they want, but certainly reserve the right to differentiate between jokes, and the conduct of ideologically driven dark web mentality types who display their constant skewering of groups they like to denigrate as their sole badge of honour.

Your memory is fading a bit I'm afraid!

She wasn't Native American; she had a Native American father and a European American mother. She was a successful actress and model, and (yes) a campaigner for civil rights for Native Americans.

She didn't receive the Oscar; she explained why Brando wished to decline it.

She expressed Brando's displeasure regarding the portrayal of Native Americans by the movie industry. She also drew attention to the 'Wounded Knee Occupation' that was taking place at the time. It wasn't a castigation of the USA for its treatment of Native Americans, as such.

The Oscar award was indeed for The Godfather. I wonder what would have transpired had Brando not won!

Footnote:
The intervention on behalf of Brando was met with a mixture of boos and applause. Just as Will Smith's was, I suppose.

It's most likely that what JPS is suffering from is 'traction alopecia', which is caused by severe and persistent tight pulling of the hair - as is usually done with the 'cornrow' style she has favoured for many years......, so Ricky is probably right!

Is that what's aka the 'Dagenham Facelift'?

We must have heard differently YT! I thought that chic was usually lovingly attributed to our very own Croydon!

It seems it's a universal 'compliment'!
After 2 years living in central London, my next 37 were spent in Kent (well, Erith!). Such 'observations' about Essex people were very common in that neck of the woods. It was often said that the River Thames served an important purpose for Erithians in that it kept people from Dagenham (pretty much directly opposite) away!

That adds an additional level of humour and absurdity if she caused the whole situation herself anyway!
