This may have gone a slightly different way if trump was still in charge. The taliban were afraid of him but it doesn't detract from the collapse of the afgan army

can anyone in power be trusted in a crisis ? Making promises/pledges/commitments that we are incapable of keeping to any meaningful degree. We can't even keep our ex-service personnel off the streets. Edited by Forest Hillbilly (18 Aug 2021 10.56am)

They folded like a cheap deckchair, and we can only assume that it's because our plans for them were so at odds with their culture to begin with. A huge waste of time and billions of dollars worth of US military equipment now in Taliban hands.

Just for the Craic like, I'd love to see Afghanistan under Taliban rule apply to join the EU.

Rare earth metals in Afghanistan were estimated to be worth anywhere between $1 trillion and $3 trillion in 2020" "As the United States departs Afghanistan and Kabul falls, China is not showing up with an army. It is showing up bearing gifts to all parties, not least the ascendant Taliban. Beijing’s prospects, therefore, are already looking much better—and cheaper—than the U.S. state- and military-building project."

A huge waste of time and billions of dollars worth of US military equipment now in Taliban hands. Beginning to smell a rat with this narrative. Far too easy a scapegoat for this entire debacle. Where is the video footage of the battles? Where are the journalists embedded in with the army units? If the Afghan army just folded up, then we would be swamped with videos of Taliban triumphs, especially in this age of phone footage. I might be completely wrong on this but from I can make out, the Afghan Army were not even deployed on the ground. More than willing to be corrected and schooled on this supposed complete and utter implosion of the Afghan Army but so far, almost zero evidence of it.

I think it is a little unfair to blame the Afghan Military as a whole. Disclaimer: there were clearly huge problems with discipline within the ranks of the ANA. However in their defence 80,000 Afghan soldiers died fighting the Taliban over the last 20 years. Trump had reduced the numbers of US military down to something like 2500 troops who were acting in a Support role, the ANA was quite happily holding its own. So I would say the ANA clearly did have the stomach for a fight, Biden's catastrophic cut & run was the catalyst for the collapse, couple that with the lack of US air support calling in Air strikes on Taliban targets, the Afghan government being weak as f***, and ANA commanders cutting deals with the Taliban and disappearing caused the whole thing to collapse there simply was no chain of command, once there is no plan things quickly deteriorate into chaos. What we now know is, there are at least 10,000 US personnel dotted all across Afghanistan completely cut off with no way to get to Kabul, Biden's Military advisors told him not to do what he did but he ignored them and pushed ahead with his plan anyway. And this mad c*** is still President.

Edited by Orange1290 (18 Aug 2021 1.20pm) Yeah, while they harvest the organs of Muslims in China and feck the Islam out of their women. Yeah, you think the Taliban are stupid. They will play them right back when it suits. Edited by Stirlingsays (18 Aug 2021 1.49pm)

Johnson came to power talking of of a 'points based immigration system' and now he's taking 20,000 Afghans into Britain.....vote blue, get some greenish version of Labour. They won't be living in Essex or Cornwall I know that. Even Farage 'there's 600 crossing the channel' has turned into Farage 'we must take them in'. Who is asking the population and who is accepting this nightmare into their area? This country is done. Edited by Stirlingsays (18 Aug 2021 1.57pm)
