Cummings is intelligent and shrewd, but here he's letting 'getting his own back' cloud his judgement. He's picked a time where people are feeling optimistic to tell us how s***ty everything is. publicly it's falling on deaf ears.

Cummings is just stating the obvious, we all know this government is incompetent and out of their depth, they're just interested in lining the pockets of their business pals rather than looking at doing things properly.

I said a few days ago Cummings should play the ball not the man that there was plenty of blame to go around. Unfortunately do to his lurid comments about individuals some of his better criticism got lost in the sensational headlines. Boris and Hancock may have made bad decisions but the Civil Service appears to have been slow to react and and its performance especially Public Heath England was woeful. Who was responsible for the warehouse full of PPE which had expired? Where was the plan to deal with this pandemic? Lots of questions to be answered about decision making. Edited by Badger11 (27 May 2021 8.29am) Definitely a fair assessment. I always thought he was almost trying to cause destruction for destruction’s sake when he was in role but listening to him yesterday everything he said yesterday about decision making and the internal workings of the internal departments in government and the civil service is quite clearly bonkers and he was right to want to change it. I definitely got that wrong about him.

Edited by Badger11 (27 May 2021 8.29am) It’s easy to guess the answers to all these questions Badger. 1) Where is the pandemic plan? Answer: It was too expensive and not enough staff to work on it so we dropped it. In short, cutbacks in the NHS and health restructuring generally will have impacted our ability to deal with a crisis of this magnitude. Individuals have reacted fantastically to the pandemic within the same industry but it is both managerial and funding flawed. If you are faced with the sort of day to day management decisions hospitals and Trusts face such as do we spend £50m developing a pandemic plan or buy 10 scanners that are going to save lives immediately you know which route they are going to take and then hope a pandemic never arrives. Well unfortunately it did!

For example (2017 numbers): Germany, 8 hospital beds per 1000 population, 39 ICU beds per 100,000 UK, 2.5 hospital beds per 1000 population, 6.6 ICU beds per 100,000 That's a massive, massive difference in quality of healthcare.

Is German healthcare free at source or primarily privately funded? I genuinely don’t know.

Both the previous posts have valid points. Funding and numbers of beds is definitely needs to increase. There is a structural problem within the Civil service which goes beyond this pandemic. The vaccine purchase was a success because a small team was put together that was not beholdant to their Civil Service masters. I worked in corporate all my career people empire build and protect their department espcially in a top down organisation. Cummings is right that today's Civil service needs to be more lateral. If the government plans a big housing project this will involve many different departments e.g. housing, transport, environment, health, local government etc. The people who are assigned to that project will probably push the agenda of their department not what is good for the country. After all if you are on a six month project seconded from Housing you will go back their afterwards so you will not want to upset your boss. We need to restructure the Civil Service so that people's careers are based on the success of these projects and not on what their department head's agenda is. Easy said than done.

The idea that the NHS has to be nationalised is nonsense as long as it is free at point of use we need to look at these successful European models.
