Disgustingly out of touch comments from Perez. This is a self serving financial rescue package for their grotesque spending over the last decade or so, now unsustainable and they don't like it.

It will be a scandal if they negotiate more money from tv/football bodies out of the whole situation.

Jocks at Wembley? Aren’t they still banned from when they took down the goalposts and dug up the turf?

Boris can stop this easily if he means what he says.

Tell the cynical six that no new work permits will be issued unless they are part of the approved football programme. This will cut off access to the best players in the world.

He should also remove any tax breaks that clubs and players enjoy deny access to any public funding and demand that they pay the full costs of policing.

In short create a hostile environment.

Sounds good but would any of that get trough the courts?

I would imagine that this would be illegal.

Whilst I’m against the league, I’m not sure I would want the government to intervene in what essentially is a business matter.

Civil War within football and of course the ESL is all about finances with the clubs able to negotiate their own broadcasting rights etc etc and increasing their turnover.

Of course there has been a visceral reaction but the clubs might have expected a degree of opprobrium so the current furore is no surprise to them. They also might believe that nothing will be able to prevent them from carrying out their plans.

There have been a plethora of threats by Government and football governing bodies but whether they can carry out their proposed actions legally remains to be seen. One suspects battles in the courts.

Just boot them out the premier league and the FA. The only competition they can compete in is this super league. Do the same all the way down to kids football for these teams. Make them outcasts. English football will adapt and come back stronger. Short term hit for long term gain.
Do not give them any thing.
Hit hard and hit immediately. Perhaps give assistance to fans to form Phoenix clubs in non league.

I'm not so sure about that.

When the MCC invites the Indian Cricket team to tour the UK there visas would be sponsored by the MCC and treated favourably by the government. Likewise if an Indian player signs for a county.

Now imagine a cricket team not recognised by the Indian Cricket authorities and not sponsored by the MCC. I doubt they would get a visa.

The work permit rules for football have been agreed by the Home Office and the official football bodies the rules are to prevent anybody claiming to be a footballer to sneak into the country.

As for the other stuff such as tax breaks and other support these are all based on the idea that football contributes to the community e.g. FA funding grass grass roots, education, fighting racism etc.

If the cynical six are no longer part of the official bodies then that special status disappears.

Anyway it's a lawyers thing it was just a thought.

This will not end at ESL midweek games, remember the 39th game idea, this will end with ESL games being played in China/USA etc, thats what franchises do, follow the money
As for the government they must get involved, our Premier league is a powerful soft power, must be defended

Without the players there is no league, irrespective of what the fans, owners, TV executives, UEFA, or anybody else wants. The players need to get together and strike in protest and refuse to sign any deals with the clubs involved until this move is taken off the table.

Will they do that? Unlikely, but it would probably be the most powerful weapon.

Publicly the government will oppose this, but if the money is right they'll step out the way when it comes to the crunch.

When this was announced I was angry but now I can see some long term benefits. Football isn't sustainable. How long can we as a club continue to spend 75% plus of our income on wages based on crowds of 24,000. If these 6 clubs and the other Europeans want to form a breakaway league, let them. They are all carrying eye watering levels of debt that can't be sustained and if/when they set up their league the superstars won't be demanding 500k / wk to play for them, it will be £1m plus. Their costs and debt will increase because without highly paid footballers , what are they? They will become the Harlem Globetrotters of the football world. Nomads

Potentially we can revert football back to a time when it was sustainable, developing our own players and taking agents and media out of the game. Pretty much every club in the top 2 divisions have their own TV channel. Terrestrial TV will still show games. Tell Sky,BT and Al Jazzeria to go do one and revert back to 3 European trophies. one for the champions of each European league, one for the cup winners etc.

We now have the chance to return football back to what it was, a game based on merit, competition and enjoyment and not one based on servicing ridiculous levels of debt

The Premier League is a corporation, so if changes are proposed why don't they just have a vote?
