Is exactly my point.

Not getting into why it is.

But local people going to games are the lifeline of any football club. The majority of people I know who go to games at Palace, Millwall, Charlton, QPR all originally come from the local area but have moved away. Now the clubs aren't attracting people who live in very close proximity to the ground.

In every place I've lived I've gone to watch the local team and it's always been something that brought the community together as a whole. London seems to have lots of fractured communities.

It's not great for the club or the community in the long run.

The club does plenty of local specific stuff - players visiting local schools, Palace for Life etc.

So that community bond is there. In fact most clubs do strive to become a focal point in their communities - take the work that QPR did after the Grenfell Tower fire.

When it comes to actual matches then as has been pointed out, it becomes a question of ticket availability. At Palace right now, that's minimal.

This dates back to pre / post war when people were born and grew up in the same community and moving away meant a couple of streets over.

Charlton's fan base is now largely in the Medway towns which is why they started laying on coaches from around there. This isn't a mickey take but if they do relocate going there makes more sense and is cheaper than moving to Greenwich.

West Ham fans are mainly based in Essex whilst the big 3 London clubs draw their support from all over the place so could move to any point on the compass.

I think the days of the local fans supporting their nearest club have long gone.

You can get tickets for Palace if you want. But the demand is for free tickets, not tickets you pay for. This is because of several reasons I’ve already mentioned.

You have nothing to show for it after the match if you compare that expenditure to something you keep.
We aren’t successful.
Ethnic minorities always ‘support’ big teams
They fit in with their crowd being Arsenal or whoever

At Palace you’ll see a few ethnic minority families dotted around and a black man with white friends here and there but you never see groups of black men. If we had the success of Arsenal that trend would be different. They aren’t going to ditch their big club for us having 30-40% possession in key teenage years because there isn’t anyone in their peer group to start that process so it never happens. It has nothing to do with ‘being made welcome’ or any other stuff or the race of the sky sports panel on Saturdays.

My interpretation was, the crowd largely doesn’t reflect the demographics of the surrounding areas.

People can argue wherefore and why, but factually I’d say it’s accurate.

Yes, factually it is accurate. However, the why is important in itself - Why do people consider it a problem to be solved? The sense that there must be some sort of problem as the newcomers don't go to football and it is a legitimate aim that the crowd should reflect the local area the business is sited in. That it is somehow important that the club support reflects the local area and handwringers see it as a problem that the supporter base largely white men.

When Palace has been, more or less, sold out for the last 8 years solving the "problem" effectively means telling some of the existing supporter base to do one or hurry up and retire. Fewer whites please.

If someone was to come on these boards and say there is a problem with the team as it doesn't reflect the fans they would (rightly) be castigated.

But it's effectively the same proposition as saying that the makeup of the fan base is a problem as it is not representative of the streets of SE25.

It's the same thing with the managers debate - we are often told the lack of black managers relative to the number of black players in the game is a problem that needs solving with the Rooney rule, but if someone suggested that the relative under representation of white players was a problem that needed resolving alongside it, there would be uproar.

Who are they wheeling out? The big reveal will be so much fun. Jeff isn't going to stick it.
I'm guessing Sol Campbell to chair, a black/mixed race Ex-England woman, probably the one who said the rest were racists, a person with a disability who plays paraplegic football in the olympics and a celebrity guest each week. First week Romesh, next week Colin Kapaernick, third week Cait Jenner, fourth week 'Hilary'.
This may be a joke but one of these will probably be correct.

The way things are going they will have no-one watching the show anyway. They have lost thousands and thousands of subscribers since having to pay again for their service and I can't see the situation getting any better for them. Sky, with it's bias news reporting and virtue signalling, knee bending garbage will wish very soon that it was just a sports channel.

Totally agree with you!
It's become SBLMN now instead of SSN!
I'll be contacting them soon to try and get a cheaper deal otherwise I'm off too.
The cheeky buggers put my subsription up by £5 since football returned. They do it so slyly too.

I am with your Erith.
I have already complained about the chap who called HLTCO racist and as much as I want to watch football I am not sure how much more of Sky's bias before ditching them altogether.
As another said - SSN is really just BLM now.

Did Lewis Hamilton take a knee, did he do a black power salute, did he stand on a car and cross his arms, does he add Epsom Salts to his bath? All valid questions for avid sports fans.

Interesting interview with Jeff Stelling post sackings.

On the new line up (although not confirmed as permanent): Sherwood, Pulis, Merson, Clinton and Glen Johnson

On women presenting: "The response on social media is horrendous. Whether it be Sue Smith or Alex Scott the criticism is horrendous and totally unjustified. When we had Soccer Specials, some of the women who’d come in had been very reluctant. They knew what the response would be, regardless of how good they were. There’s this blinkered idea – ‘It’s a woman, what can she know about football?’

They had Tony pulis....Tony Judas....commentating.

Another reason this eagle will be tuning out.

How is the managerial career going Mr pulis ? You walked away from the prem to warm a PC chair at the sky studio.
