I am a civil servant and have worked in industry and both a big accountancy practice and top legal firm in my career. Aa for accountability, far more public scrutiny than any MP or government adviser. Not sure about jobs for the boys either as I was born and bred in the tougher end of Croydon and have worked bloody hard to get where I am.

The Civil Service is full of hard working, very averagely paid (although this has improved in recent years) staff who provide stability and order to the various government departments. You don't need mavericks in the Civil Service, you need safe pairs of hands who will move with the times, but only when it makes sense to do so. Basic GCSEs will get you into the Service if you are willing to start at the bottom and work up, so it is hardly jobs for the boys. It is also possible to go from the bottom to the very top if you are tenacious and talented enough.

I am hardly a fan of the establishment, but the attempt here to blame the civil service for the governments failings is nauseous. The idea that thousands of excess deaths have been caused by less than rapid civil servants does not stand up neither have I seen it made anywhere but here. The PM got his lock-up when he wanted it. He was obsessed with the economy and brexit, in fact the cabinet dropped key pandemic planning teams altogether. The NHS 'world-beaters' viral research units were disbanded as they did not make any money. Johnson delayed and delayed hoping it just wasn't true and everything would just blow over. Even he had to face reality when the French president told him bluntly he would shut the borders with the UK if he did not get a grip.

The Civil Service often succeed in spite of the circumstances they are placed under but no commentary ever covers this. Ignorance around the CS, it's personnel and workings are generally quite shocking. I include myself in that statement before my dealings with the Public Sector over the last x amount of years.

Funny how those that disagree live in the South East, the civil service is a law unto itself, those that work in it have a reason to defend it, wait till the government start moving departments out of the South East, the whinging will really start, because very few will find work in the private sector

I feel like you may have lost your job at the DWP or something at some point in time and decided it was because everybody else was stupid. Not saying that's the case of course, just how your comments come across.

Nicholas, strange how you try to belittle someone, just because they have a different point of view, the answer is no, the DWP have never upset me, i have just always hated privilege, and the civil service and the Lords epitomises privilege

That’s when going into the civil service was dependent on which school you went to. I could think of a lot worse things to complain about. His argument should have begun and rested at the House of Lords, as I don’t think there would be many arguing that point.

There are around 430,000 people employed in the civil service. Of these, 83,500 are based in London Rupert McNeil is a very clever chap and is making a difference. He comes bang out of the private sector.

I am not trying to belittle you which is an ironic statement given there may be Civil Servants reading your posts where you claim they are unemployable outside of the Public Sector. Your posts are completely ignorant, laughably so, and I can claim that to be factual not just an opinion and quite frankly insulting to somebody like me who has family members, friends and colleagues who work within the Civil Service. I myself have worked with Civil Servants on numerous occasions so am speaking from experience. CPFC may be the only thing we share in common.
