Beefy was quite young when appointed, 24 and West Indies were a formidable opponent in those days.

I was very shocked by Australia's tactics yesterday,Stokes was on a roll but why not put close fielders in Leach's face? My conclusion is that the "sandpaper" episode lingers and they did not want to be seen as bad guys. Previous Oz teams would have been far more proactive, they waited for "it" to happen and it didn't !

It was clearly meant to be. The Aussies burning their review on that leach LBW that was clearly nowhere near out and then the very next over Stokes nailed in front and not given. Dropped catches, albeit difficult chances and the Lyon dropped ball runout. It was clearly meant to be England’s day. Stokes has now played 2 innings this summer that could be classed as an innings of a lifetime. Just brilliant

As a fair skinned ginger myself I do often wonder what sun cream he uses when on the field all day and whether it's a special kind that doesn't run in your eyes with the profuse sweating. Also does he re-apply during lunch and tea? I once heard John Hartson talking about how he couldn't play in warm European countries because he couldn't be out in the sun all day. The idea of playing football in Scotland appeals to me greatly - perfect weather and the standard would make me look half decent.

I'd like to try Denly to open with Burns and give Roy a chance at number 4. Opening the batting with a new ball in test cricket is a specialist skill. Roy doesn't open at county level so it can't be expected for him to do so at test standard. If that fails, Ollie Pope is in good form so perhaps worth a go. There will be a selection headache when Anderson is back - I feel it will either Buttler, Woakes or Roy to get the chop. An Anderson/Archer Vs Smith battle would be a great watch. Captaincy is an issue. As we have seen in the past and as we're seeing now, so many players lose form when given the armband. I'd hate to risk that with Stokes. Root doesn't appear to be tactically astute and its effecting his batting, however outside him and Stokes there are no obvious candidates. The pundits suggest Buttler has leadership qualities and is a excellent tactician, although his form puts him out of contention.

My contention is that there are far better batsman in the county system.....and frankly that was always the case....for example his first class average after 201 games is 36.47. I view his selection as a wasted opportunity.....If you are telling me that Joe Denly is amongst the six best batsman in England we just differ wildly. With the captaincy....I suppose I just don't rate Root in that capacity and feel that this is just another example of poor selection that has been a focal point of England's management for some time now.
