They certainly have a very playground mentality to engage in such behaviour, that much I do agree with. Perhaps expecting a 'What would Jesus Do?' style reaction from the target of being compared to a monkey due to your race isn't very realistic either though. People deal with abuse in their own way. I would argue that abuse is abuse. The racial element seems to give some people an opportunity to become disproportionately outraged in comparison to other abuse. I would argue that a culture that encourages this kind of selective outrage is one that encourages the use of that specific abuse. That seems inevitable if it appears effective in terms of antagonising the victim.

There will always be certain behaviour that people don't want to see in the game. Racist abuse would be at the top of a great many lists. That being the case it factors into peoples' thinking. If you want to be part of a club and share in their successes, you adhere to basic conventions along the way. As I stated if this is a norm in some countries domestically then okay. If that's the distasteful culture I'm not suggesting swooping in and changing the world, they can sort out their own problems. International tournaments differ though and if you wish to engage on that level the world is then your audience, not just those in the terraces.

Whatever you say about the subject there still has to be a reasonable and practical approach that actually does something or else it is a waste of time and money. When you put racial abuse on a pedestal above other abuse and anti social behaviour, you have created a problem for yourself which you have no practical solution for.

If I'm at a game with my family and someone is behaving like that to one of our players I won't be 'oh never mind' I'll tell you that much. I'll tell them exactly what I think. It cuts both ways. I appreciate that different cultures have various takes on things. On the international stage though, there is a standard you are expected to uphold. This isn't new, and what happened clearly was racist. People can behave how they wish, not just fans, players too. I'll take a dignified objection to being subject to racism, over mindless monkey chants as my measure of who's in the wrong.

It does make you wonder the motives of people who go to great length to deny or trivialise the race issue every time it appears

I’m still keen to find out where your fisty cuff is though. I’d trademark that if I were you, before the sex toy industry gets a hold of it. And you expect me to take you seriously?

Complete yokels behind us. Thankfully they are no longer season ticket holders. Total pricks.

I can tell you that I have never witnessed any racism at a football match. I remember John Fashanu getting stick when his brother was revealed as gay but nothing beyond that.

If the worst thing that ever happens to me is being verbally abused by a bunch of morons, I will be quite happy. That doesn't make it right or acceptable. Happens on here all the time.

On account that you don't view monkey chants aimed at black players to be racist, I certainly don't doubt that you haven't witnessed racism. What happened is an example of people being abused due to their race now. so nevermind the 70s. I've told you that if I saw it I'd say something. Apparently if you heard it you'd see it as childish and be unhappy at anyone voicing objection. Well, that's for you isn't it. The easy way out vs standing against something that most would and rightly do view as out of order.
