It was regressive. I love the way people bandy around phrases like 'wealty' and 'rich' and 'regressive'. What you really mean is that you were happy when people with more money were paying more instead of you.

I'm sure. There were lots of left wing activists there like you. I wasn't a leftie at the time - That came later (mid 20s) I was a member of the Liberal Party, back then and with them and the SDP. It was around 1990s when I became involved with the left wing. People were paying before they paid rates. Then they were asked to pay a lot more, whilst people who were far better off, got to pay a lot less whilst living in far bigger properties. Yeah unsurprisingly they were f**ked off. It wasn't an even remotely fair system of taxation. So despite the assertions, I was a) Protesting not rioting b) Not a Leftie c) Employed

When people with far bigger properties were paying more than people in far smaller homes you mean. You make it sound like only the wealthier we paying rates.

What is fair is often a matter of perspective. It would not have benefitted me personally at the time but many might say that people having to pay just because they own a house while many others pay nothing is equally 'unfair'.

Well nowadays I get stung for outrageous amounts of council tax because our house is ajudged to be in a high band which is quite ridiculous. Shall I go and knock a policeman's hat off in anger?

When it comes to the proportion of income that should come out of earnings the left ideologically....apart from the nutters....get it about right....in terms of fairness. When it comes to the proportion of income that should come out of earnings the right extract about as much money from the wealthy as possible (because they know the left would be much worse). That isn't the same thing as fairness.....that's a wholly different question. But importantly the right keep wealth in the country. The poll tax though....that wasn't a fair tax.....again, it would need a new thread to go over why properly. Edited by Stirlingsays (12 Oct 2017 4.25pm)

All those subsidies and profits going to foreign owned train companies, power, water etc etc is not keeping wealth in the country. Much of London is foreign owned thanks to the right selling it off. No one likes paying taxes, but Income Tax is probably the fairest if levied equally, ie: everyone pays the same percentage of their income. If you have acquired assets, good luck to you, shouldn't be taxed. VAT isn't very fair, a millionaire and a poor person pay the same tax on an article. More of a problem is what is done with the tax collected, so much waste, daft projects, needless quangos, numerous 'parliaments', incompetence etc. Edited by hedgehog50 (12 Oct 2017 5.52pm)

And let it be said a thread started about an inquiry about the FLA a non political movement of the forgotten working class turns into political hogwash by the HOL and some of the very big egos that have hijacked it with their boring political issues.

Yeah, but it was spoken about....threads evolve. What else is there to say about the FLA? Can't see anything wrong with them myself.
