The rise of a right wing party in Germany is a result of the damaging policies that the ideologue Angela Merkel has pursued. Nearly a quarter of the German labour force is currently on "low wages", which is second only to Lithuania in the entire eurozone.

Most of that cheap labour is concentrated in East Germany, where the left's failure to offer an alternative meant that AfD was able to capitalise on people's fears of even cheaper labour arriving in Germany and taking their jobs, despite East Germany having the lowest level of immigration in the country.
