Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune) |

I never understand the reaction from people who are upset that they're no longer allowed to engage in this type of behaviour. The "political correctness gone mad" statement is a cliche used because there is no real argument to defend against slurs against a person's race, religion or sexual orientation. If you are banned from singing homophobic songs what harm does that do to you as an individual? Do you feel excluded? Do you feel that you are no longer accepted by society? Maybe when added to all the other incidents of people telling you your homophobic songs/slurs are inappropriate you start to feel that there is something wrong with you? People tell you you're not part of a minority group "you're probably just an overweight racist tw*t whose only joy left in life (since you can no longer find your p**** under the rolls of fat) is attacking minority groups", but that makes you angry because that's an unfair stereotype and how dare people judge you like that. You feel depressed, you take out your copy of the sun and start beating off to a picture of Theresa May, since they've even taken the tits away. Rivalries should be a bit of fun, not used as a chance to unleash some "good old-fashioned bigotry". Focus on the football related stuff; after all, recent history gives us a lot to brag about.

To be fair, being a Brighton fan is probably the most offensive thing going, as were their attendances at the Withdean before Bloom's money and the mecano, soulless s***ex.

What is called 'banter' here is actually a specialized way of talking that, for many Palace fans may be fine, and no problem at all for many others, including many Brighton fans. Problem is that there are some for whom this 'banter' is encouragement actually to go on to more and commit acts of violence - I've seen coin throwing at Brighton away games accompanied by angry shouted examples of the 'banter'; others will have seen or heard of more violent examples. This kind of 'banter' fuels homophobic violence; there can be no doubt about that. It fuels it just as oxygen fuels fire. Depriving fire of oxygen iis a good way to put it out. Stepping back from this homophobic 'banter' would be a good step in reducing homophobic violence. It's the good and right thing to do.

Showed the original tweet to a gay friend last night whose response was (more or less word for word) "Oh for **** sake! If you use the term 'gay' as an insult you have a problem, if you take the word 'gay' as an insult you have a problem. It's no different to the "n" or "p" words & a majority of adults get that. The thing that boils my **** about this kind of **** is being told by some sanctimonious ****** that I should be offended by it. They, above all, should shut the **** up & stop trying to make themselves look special, especially when all most of us want is to treated like everybody else." Perhaps it might be the most relevant perspective on the issue, despite the beer consumption involved.
Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five! |

I recall years ago the chant aimed at a referee "Who's your father referee ?........ you ain't got one you're a B.....D...." etc etc. Somehow I believe that if this was a modern day chant it would be seen as less offensive than homophobic chants.

Was the pub in soho, were you there in an investigative capacity, just in case years later the internet and chat rooms are invented and you'd like an incite into a topic such as this?
