Well said, that mirrors EXACTLY my own views on the matter. Post of the entire tiresome debate.. Quote Penge Eagle at 08 Apr 2004 4:56pm
The ironic thing is that my "non white" mates totally agree with my views! It's just certain f***ing middle-class, sheltered, liberal/left wing WHITE w***ers, who I unfortunately associate with, don't! (unfortunately, my profession is full of them) They're the PC cnuts that make my blood boil and should be deported. I'd happily swap them for a load of Muslims who have respect for this country, its culture and want to contribute for its success! Edited by Penge Eagle (08 Apr 2004 4:57pm)

Surely it's a bit much to suggest everyone who doesn't agree with you is a liberal/left wing white w@nker? The idea that the only people who don't support your view come from such a narrow racially-defined area is ridiculous. Edited by OknotOK (08 Apr 2004 7:35pm)

Edited by OknotOK (08 Apr 2004 7:35pm) I'm only suggesting that the people who disagree with my views on immigration are of that social class. There are of course exceptions, but in my experience I have generally found this to be the case. I have probably met more British people who hate this country than any other nationality living here. That's just British people for you Though I reckon that the only country where that isn't the case is probably the States! Brits love to complain and love to feel undervalued and persecuted. Though maybe I am being unfair anyway cos I don't think I have seen your view on immigration properly laid out. But I am fairly sure that it isn't just the white middle-class that form the basis of opposition to your views.

That's a cute generalisation. I bet if someone made a similar remark about moslems, you'd be on them quicker than you could say 'New Statesman'.

Have a look at this from another post on General Talk: Quote
Anyway, 'towel head' is in the same category as 'frog' or 'kraut'. It's just a name. And a very funny one, too. Relax, old bean. So how come if I make a 'cute' generalisation which obviously is a funny one, it's reason to slag me off, but if it's with something you agree with then it counts as 'very funny'. 'Pot' 'kettle' and 'black' all spring to mind. My comment was made with a sense of self-depreciation that I tried to communicate. Maybe I didn't do it very well. But given I count myself as British and given how many of my friends are British and would agree, I also thought it was a worthwhile one.

I'm actually drawing attention to your apparent dislike of generalisations and your subsequent use of one. Whether I myself made a generalisation or not is beside the point - I never said I disliked them. I'm puzzled as to why you interpret this as 'slagging you off' when all all I was doing was pointing out an inconsistency in your approach. Bit defensive, aren't we? I actually don't remember saying I disliked generalisations either. But when I make a only semi-serious and humerous remark, I don't think that counts the same as suggesting that all muslims hate this country or support Al'Quidah etc etc (and no I am not saying you have said that before you even bother). I was, at the same time, trying to help consider why some British people seem to apparently 'hate' their own country -- a feeling that I do not subscribe to.

That people who disagree with your view might not just be white. they might be asian, black, working-class or upper-class. I actually think that witty generalisations can help defuse racial tension (hence when I posted that Indian Simpsons cartoon a few weeks ago).
