In actual fact the latest move by Osborne is NOT the first and only such move he has made which affects the banking sector. I believe there have been EIGHT such measures taken since the Government came to power but the latest is by far the largest. Actually there have been a number of changes to the banking tax regimes over the last 5 years so the latest announcement is not the first.Osborne has said that as banks have become more profitable it is only right they contribute more to the public finances.

Some people do get a bit OTT about whether Labour or Tories are in power. They talk as if it will have a monumental impact on their lives, when if anything the parties are closer together than ever. People invest so much emotion, mostly anger, brainwashing themselves into pushed and contrived black and white political narratives. Those accruing and most influence and wealth within society already have the ear of the majority of politicians, so hold a more realistic and functional view of the theatre we're all presented with. They can then use this to their advantage while the man on the street casts his vote and imagines he's 'done his bit, done his duty'.
There are still some fundamental differences though not like the good ol' days but one thing unites them all. They would sell their first born if it meant that they'd get in for 5 yrs.

Ok would you like to answer the question as to why this levy was only put in place after HSBC were caught out and whether Osbourne ignored that he could have raised this from the banks or just didn't know? Edited by EricYoung'sSweatBand (31 Mar 2015 3.14pm)

Well I put myself back on the electrol register today after a lengthy lay off, I don't know if I will be off to the polls to strike a vote. Neither labour (who I have been siding with as long as my vote counted) nor conservative (who I would never vote for) are getting my vote, at a push the greens might but apart from 1 issue that stands out for me then not much of there manifesto ideas strike a chord with me. There is a single issue party CISTA (cannabis is safer then alcohol) which would get my vote if they had a contender in my constituency more for the fact that I believe in this issue and it should be considered but neither of the 2 main party's have said anything nor denied looking at reform, the libs have said something about non criminalization for possession and to be treated as a health issue rather then criminal but the libs are a wasted vote.

Ok would you like to answer the question as to why this levy was only put in place after HSBC were caught out and whether Osbourne ignored that he could have raised this from the banks or just didn't know? Very simply because he acted after revelations revealed a little-known loophole which was being exploited for a few years.Tax regimes of banks are mired in complexities !

He did not know that he was due over 5 billion in tax and I'm supposed to believe that he is competent. The cuts could have been 5 billion less severe had he done his job and made sure these loop holes were closed first. I look forward to you answering my other two questions.

Absolutely NOT. Maybe under "New Labour" the parties were closer but "Red Ed" has chosen to distance himself from NL saying "“The era of New Labour has passed. A new generation has taken over.” To suggest Milliband is left wing is laughable.

Who do you think you are, Jeremy Paxman ? I've already explained that it was a little known loophole in fact it went back to 2009 when Labour were in power. To suggest that Osborne is "Incompetent" in these circumstances is beyond the pale.

Tell that to Mr Blair who said a few months ago that Ed Miliband had turned Labour into a "Traditional left-wing party". Anyway have to leave this debate for now as I have some more campaign work to do ! See you all later !

Labour as party isn't even centre-left.

I've already explained that it was a little known loophole in fact it went back to 2009 when Labour were in power. To suggest that Osborne is "Incompetent" in these circumstances is beyond the pale. So there was a loophole from 2009 and a year later when Osbourne was in charge of the budget, he couldn't even see that a tax loophole was about to cost the country 5 billion. FIVE BILLION. I can understand a couple of million here and there but FIVE BILLION and he still didn't notice the missing money when it was actually gone 4 years later. Did he not do his due diligence or did he have no intention of closing it until caught and chose instead to place punitive measures on the poor? What else could it be? You've become evasive and are calling me Paxman just for wanting some answers that apparently, an hour ago you were happy to give but are no longer happy too. Wrong type of question or is that just like Cameron and Osbourne, you can't actually defend their record either?
