They should carbon date the Arthur. That would show it was built in 1861. Or maybe 1681.

After reading the article on here, no we can not. Parish has been made to look silly here and he or the club need to respond or put a stop to this nonsense.

When we didn't win anything in 2005, I thought we'd missed out. At least we might see Palace win something in 2061.

Also, to answer the original question - "no we shouldn't have". Can well see the club having to back-track at some point on this matter. Edited by doombear (22 Jun 2022 11.25am)

One would think this may have been worth asking the fans about.

However, as I said here a couple of days ago, this is a marketing gimmick and Parish is a marketing man. He knows a marketing opportunity he can monetise when he sees one, obviously. It's all a bit embarrassing, really. We were founded in 1905. And the sooner we get back to it, the better. Egg on your face is not a good look. It'll be interesting to see whether the club accept reality (now they've presumably done (and incurred the cost of) the machining for the new club badges) or if they double down on their misguided adventure into revisionist history. The way I see it is the amateur club folded in 1876 because of the pitch problems, but 20 years later the landlords (Crystal Palace Company) think they can make some money if they re-form the club, which takes another ten years to actually happen in 1905. So strictly speaking it’s not the same club. But strictly speaking the current club was started in 2010. Many clubs and organisations are resurrected or re-formed after a break. In terms of football history both Wanderers and Clapham Rovers have been re-formed in 20th century. So we can regard CPFC1905 not as a continuation but a re-formation of CPFC1861. So in answer to the original question, on balance I think we can claim 1861 as our founding date.

I would however also suggest that the claiming of being the oldest football club will p!ss off many a BHA, Millwall, Charlton and fair few other fans these days and for that, I am pro 1861.

This is a "Trigger's broom" claim - 17 new heads and 14 new handles, but it's still the same broom...
